It's heavier and harder to apply than paint. Be prepared to hurt. 4951

Are you trying to match something existing or just make an old wall look different? What type of texture do you want? There are several standard ones like giving the wall a gritty texture or adding texture with a sponge or stiff brush. The sky is the limit! 4951

Just trying to match an existing texture.  I had a large dog door removed and new drywall put in.   4951

That's a challenge since you are just doing a section of a wall and not the whole wall but it can be done if you have an idea of what they did to get the texture on the surrounding area. If it is a grit or something added to the paint you can find that kind of stuff at the big box stores. As tquid18 mentioned there are even spray on cans and  you just paint over it to match your all color. Sometimes the texture just come from a roller, they sometimes mix some drywall mud into the paint and roll it on. That's how you get that orange peel kind of surface. And there are textures that are applied with a trowel but that is more typical on a ceiling. I'm more of a fan of smooth drywall myself but I had to texture my entire kitchen ceiling when I replaced all the drywall and I kind of like the knock down effect I got with a big drywall knife. And Youtube is a great place to look for ideas! 4951

I applied my textured paint with an old paint brush- 2 foot by 2 foot area - glopped it on thick and then brushed in in a vertical direction. Then I went over the area with a 2 inch putty knife - leaving some of the brush marks visible beneath and a 3 dimensional "Spanish Knife Texture" on top. Then I applied 2 coats of color paint. I love the look.I've also done a sand texture -I brushed it on as the roller slung it EVERYwhere. It is time consuming but worth it 4951

Mix the sand texture thoroughly into the paint, then roll it out from a paint tray. A mixer on a drill works good. A lambs wool roller works best. The thorough mixing will avoid clumping. 4951

@foxymama: what IS the existing texture?  you have lots of variations...skip trowel, spray and knockdown, sand texture...you have to know how it was done to match it. you could take a pic into a paintshop or to someone who knows drywall work. it is hard to get the pic right tho..shine a light on the wall and take pictures from both straight on and from a side angle

I think it's just the textured walls like all the houses seem to have here in kingwood. I think I'd get joint compound/drywall repair dip my hand in it, and pat the new drywall area with my hand, the go over it gently with a putty knife.  4951
