Checked on the marina in the yak this weekend.  The old cut down at the end to the river is completely silted in.  The water isnt draining thru there at all, not even a trickle.  Parking lot is still partially covered in water w marina at least 3 feet or more high.  I dont see the water dropping much from this level if at all.  A new overflow cut needs to be dredged pretty soon or Hamblen is going to flood all the time. 4951

I was over there in my yak ,myself fishing. Water did seem really high despite going back down to normal water level. Did you see the mats from the driving range over off Townsen? Also a few big trees there at the lot fell "over", maybe a windshear over there the other day during the storms. Fish all over the place, mainly in the trees, that middle area that is probably waist deep mud is 3-4ft of water. I heard years ago they tried to open it back up, but guy using the machine was warned that doing it was not legal. That house that is at the end of Hamblen, there must be 8-10 ft of sand in it where a big sand bar lodged itself after last rain. Still think they need to raze those condos over there, and rebuild on stilts if they plan to stay longer. 4951

The HOA has the funds to dredge it, should have done it years ago. I went to one of their meetings last year and they are sittings on a lot of money. They talk a lot of tall talk about doing things with our funds but it never materializes. Believe it filled in with the hurricane and it has stayed that way. Should have dredged it immediately. 4951

The house at the end is screwed.  The only water draining was at the brown stilted house.  Water flowing over driveway across the road into Beason lake (what we always called that inlet). 4951

@beastmode:   Much worse now.  The amount of sand back there is unreal.

IT came in from the top near the condos from the river at one time and drained out that canal that those houses are on in the back. Silted in 94 flood. If they opened that end up, that thing would drain out, no question to it. They wont even pick up the trash over there, they sure wont fund a probably 200K dredging job. 4951

I am not sure Forest Cove HOA can just hire someone to do some dredging anyway. That kind of action requires permits and permission by the Texas Parks and Wildlife. Rivers are a moving entity. To build something along a river and think that the river will always stay exactly the same is a little short sighted. All those big dips in the road in trailwood, forest cove and even on 59 are where the riverbed use to be. When I use to go out Jesse Jones there were trails that brought me out to a big beach. Now that beach is gone and there are different trails to use because the '94 flood moved the entire beach somewhere else. Things change constantly when it comes to rivers and for the most part it's best to let nature take it's course.  4951

@Steven H: They have the money, likely a couple million dollars in that account from from what I recall.It should be considered routine maintenance every 3-5 years.

Where do you get swimming yaks from? Is there a yak ranch around here? Or, do you import them from Mongolia? Do you live in yurt with your yak? And, honestly, why are you talking about yaks? 4951

@beastmode: Is that the job of the Forest Cove HOA?  I would think it's up to the State of Texas to dredge waterways.

They own the Marina so I believe they could do it if they wanted. It use to be open to the river naturally so I don't think it needs any approval. 4951

I live in Forest Cove and I'm asking myself these questions:
1. Did they get money from state or federal funds to do this? And if so, why haven't they done it?
2. If they didn't get funds from some agency and the funds have to come from the HOA, why would others that don't live there or use the area have to pay to have it dredged?

Hate to sound one sided, but I didn't buy property in the river.

Sorry, but I think I'll try to attend the next HOA meeting. 4951

Dredging the Marina / river access re-establishes entry to the river for Forest Cove HOA members. I think the main problem though is not that it can't be done but more so they do not want to do it since non residents tend to abuse the Marina and it is difficult to control access. The HOA has a lot of money. Look around Forest Cove, no sign or flowers anywhere. The community center and pool are really dated. It would be nice to start taking those funds and doing something with our money. They always talk about it at the meetings but no action. They even stopped sending out the newsletter.  4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA:

I believe that dredging waters by the San Jacinto River is controlled by the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) and the Corps of Engineers.
