Looks like Mr. and Mrs. Hawk have set up a nest in the pine trees around our house. I can hear them all day, sounds like a high pitched whistle/shriek kind of call. Then from time to time I hear the Blue Jays yaking as they like to gang up on hawks and pester them. The last time we had a nest nearby was in 2011 but with the drought and lack of rain they abandoned the nest by mid summer. 4951

Watch out for the small pets in your area. Remind your neighbors. Mom has one behind her house and the vet said her poodle could easily be carried away. 4951

I have a few hawks that live close by so I don't let my little 6 lb dog out unsupervised for any longer than it takes him to do his business. On sunny days he likes to lay in the middle of the yard and soak up the rays, but as soon as those hawks start circling I make him come inside.   4951

We have an owl nest in the pines behind our house. I think it likes the looks of all the little pups in the neighborhood.
I used to have to stray cats who lived on the golf course across the road. They disappeared earlier this spring.
Hope they moved but suspect the got an invite for dinner one night. 4951

The average hawk you'll find in the US (red-tail, white tail, Cooper's, ferruginous) can manage about 6-10 lbs of prey. Of course, they can seriously injure a larger animal, including humans, with their razor sharp talons. Eagles on the other hand, can manage up to a 30 pounds of prey. 4951

Had the peegesus scared out of me this weekend. Driving down our street and saw something BIG (not horse or Bree big) jump off the yard INTO the street in front of me (but in the other lane and side of the road). Like 30 feet in front me.It turned out to be a hawk, standing there (didn't see it standing there) and jump up and spread it wings part way, and landed on a dead squirrel in the street.I'm like swerving and braking, figured I was fix'n to hit a large cat or small dog, until I saw it land on the squirrel and fold it's wings back in.It landed rather aggressively on the squirrel, attacking it with beak and nail, I guess thinking it might be alive, but after a second when my heart rate went back down, and replaying it in my minds eye, it was sort of kewl.It spread it's wings not to fly, more like to make itself look bigger, or hide what it was doing from above, not sure. They were bent backwards at the mid-joint, sort of half deployed. 4951

@FreebyrdII: We have a few owls around here, I hear them at dusk and night. They seem to be the Great Horned Owls. Your picture appears to be an owl, not a hawk, but it is kind of small. The Great Horned Owl is very powerful and can prey on animals larger than itself including cats, skunks, and possums.Although many owls are known for being exclusively nocturnal, this owl is not and is active at dusk, sometimes during the day. The Great Horned Owl preys on terrestrial vertebrates including mammals, other birds, reptiles and amphibians. 4951

I'm glad to see this thread for all to read. Raptors (hawk, Eagles, owls etc) are active in Kingwood and capable of snatching their prey in this fashion. we always accompany our 6lb poodle outside. Thanks to the OP for this important reminder! 4951
