Big rig went up in flames. There's something else around Sorters but couldn't tell if it was a separate incident or just blocking the road for the big rig issue, ride the feeder or take an alternate route!! 4951

Just heard this on the news. Guess it happened 2 hrs ago.

Well, mornings like this means heading North to 99 to get to work. And paying almost $4 more. Oh well. 4951

All lanes on 59 southbound are funneled into the far left lane. The HOV lane entrance by Reeves furniture is open, but traffic is backed up to Kingwood Drive. All southbound feeder road lanes are open.

Even Sorters is backed up to Kingwood Drive due to people trying to use it as an alternative route.

Best bet at the time I crossed if you have to go that route is to take Kingwood Drive to the feeder road. It only put me 20 minutes behind normal times.
So to clarify the misleading title, 59 South is NOT closed, but some lanes are. 4951

Crap, is it still an issue? The radio suggested HasMat was still cleaning up. I have to take my DW to the airport for another fun week in East Chicago at the steel mills. Was planning on leaving at 8:30 this morning. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood: According to transtar it still is.  You could go through Atascocita and Humble but my guess is that won't be any faster.  Best bet is probably to leave early.

Do you know how to cut through Forest Cove? I would do that and take the river turnaround. It brings you by that furniture store. Just get on feeder and stay in the right lane. Take the road that takes you by SAMs. Take 1960 West to Lee rd. Lee Road takes you to the Airport 4951

I left at about 6:30 and ended up taking Lake Houston to 1960. A lot more driving but at least I was moving. I only ended up being about 10 minutes later than usual to work (downtown) so I guess I made the right decision. It looks like my normal route of getting on 59 at Northpark was/is a total cluster right now according to Google Maps traffic. I thought about taking Northpark all the way to Sorters McEllen (or whatever it's called) and taking that all the way to 59, but it looks like that's a popular idea.... 4951

@mom82:

From what I saw on the video on Channel 13, the hazmat spill is right over the turnaround. 4951

@Spork:

"Misleading title"......? Uhh, the highway was closed when I went by at around 5:00 this morning. Excuse the hell out of me if I don't get on here and edit my post every time there's a change in status. 4951

@Spork: 59 was closed when I ran through at 5:15, so at the time the OP posted, 59 was completely shut down going southbound.  Not misleading, just a matter of timing.

Just got back from Bush, it's 9:09 and we stayed on the frontage road from KW Dr to the entrance ramp for 59 just after the river but before Townsend. You get a great view of the truck, most of the box part is a melted heap hanging over the guard rail. Traffic was really bad on 59 and the frontage road slowed down where the HOV entrance lane forces people over as well as just before where folks in the far right lane discovered they would be forced over to the light for Sorter's and were feeding into the main flow of traffic. There was a bit of rubber necking as we passed the wreck but once on the entrance ramp it was full speed a head. Coming home was fine, no slowdowns on the north bound 59 lanes. Oh and the traffic that used Sorter's or Hamblin to where you enter at Reeves was backed up pretty bad. Best bet is the frontage road.It probably added 15 minutes to the trip to Bush but was moving all the time. 4951

@djchavez0921 - yes, obviously you must not have received the recent memo which clearly stated the new guidelines. If you post on a matter or situation that might change over time, you are obligated to update your post every 15 minutes so that we all are up to date on the issue. 4951
