If you have an Internet connection, you've probably read at least one article in the past few days claiming that science has shown that dogs hate being hugged.We at Speaking of Science are not here to argue that you should go squeeze the life out of a puppy. But we are here to squeeze the life out of this misleading science coverage.The problem here is that what's being reported as a "study" is, in fact, an op-ed written in the magazine Psychology Today by a single researcher."This is a set of casual observations," Stanley Coren, the retired University of British Columbia professor who penned the column, told The Post. He reiterated that his data collection wasn't part of a peer-reviewed study.LINK 4951

I think a lot of it has to do with familiarity. I've owned several dogs that loved affection which often included a hug at the neck or shoulders (talking bigger dogs like a lab). But I don't think they would have enjoyed it from a stranger or someone they were not as comfortable with or if it was sudden. 4951

MY dog loves hugs.  He hugs back.  Well, he doesn't hug back with his arms - that would be weird.  But if you get down on the floor to hug him, he totally leans his head right into your neck, so it feels like he's participating.I'll keep hugging him.The other one clearly does not like it - she stiffens and waits impatiently for you to let go.  So I show my affection by rubbing her velvety ears.  Seriously, science.  We don't need you.  I communicate with my pets just fine. 4951

@FoFa:
The news stated was from viewing pics I thought. How scientific was that? What was going on before the pic or during? I have one dog who loves cuddles and hugs and one who does not... 4951

@mutton: Yes, something like 241 random pics on the intraweb thingy.
How scientific was that?
I think that is the point, the author even said it was just an observation, but it is being reported as a "study". Keep that in mind when you hear some such crap about anything in the news media. 4951

Our pup likes to be hugged.  The best is when she leans her head down on my shoulder.  I feel like she's hugging back.  Our kitty will even let me hug him from time to time.  But just like people, you have to know your animal and when they are in the mood for a hug. 4951

I have a pitbull who loves hugs... my daughter even goes as far as snuggling with him and he eats it up b/c he loves any kind of affection and attention. I think it depends on how you raise a dog... if you are very affectionate and constantly petting and cuddling them then they are used to it but if you run up to a dog that isn't very social or not handled a lot then beware of them getting nervous and possibly lashing out. It's common sense and some ppl lack that! LOL
