We are looking at buying a house and one of the houses I really like smells bad! It's obvious the owners smoke in this house. I'm wondering what steps would need to be taken to get that smoke out. Obviously we would recarpet upstairs (no carpet downstairs) and paint but I'm wondering about ducts, etc. Anyone been through this process? 4951

Many years ago I was looking to buy a house and it also had a very strong cigarette smell. I contacted an odor removing company and they told me that it was easier to get the smell of a dead body out of a house then it was to get cigarette smoke smell out. The nicotine literally is absorbed in the walls the carpets everything. 4951

Im going to tell you even though people will accuse me of trying to sell to you but spray the walls with younglivings thieves cleaner. Spray the carpets down with the same cleaner and leave it a day then Clean the carpets with thieves and purification oil in the water and buy a diffuser and diffuse 24 hours straight with purification and thieves oil while you are gone or 4 hours on 4 ours off while you are there. Its all 100 percent chemical free and safe...even for pets. You can also put drops of the oil in your air filters.

Not sure I would buy the house.  You will be all in and fully committed before you find out if anything works properly.  Could be looking at removing drywall and insulation to properly get it out, if it's possible at all.Good luck. 4951

Just read you will repaint and carpet. So just diffusing and spraying down areas you are not painting will do. You will have to use an oil based primer before you paint. You can also like I said add drops of the essential oils in the air filters. I would add a couple drops every 6 hours to the filters for about a week so you have a constant flow going through the ducts. I have known people to add abundance and thieves oil to their paint. About 2 drops of each per gallon but I honestly have not done that myself... LOL 4951

Before we bought this house, smokers had lived hear for years. We washed all the walls & ceilings, and then applied a thick coating of Kilz primer. Replaced all the blinds - they were plastic, and it holds odors. We replaced the cabinets in the bathrooms, and painted the kitchen cabinets. That got rid of all the smells. 4951

My first home smelled like cigarette smoke pretty bad. The walls were yellow with nicotine stains. We didn't have enough money left over after buying the house so we just repainted everything - Everything. The smell went away pretty quickly for the most part. Once we were finally able to replace the carpet there was no trace of cigarette smell. 4951

I wouldn't buy it. Too much risk involved, especially if repainting doesn't work. We fell in love with a house once that had a very bad dog smell in the master bedroom and adjoining sun room. It was so bad you could tell the previous owners neglected their animals and never bathed them. It was horrid. Ended up buying a house where previous owners had dogs but you would never have known but for the doggy door on the outside shed and the occasional dog hair stuck in between a crevice. 4951

@Bearfin:

I would definitely negotiate a lower price or get some allowances for the cleaning if you decide to put a contract on it. 4951

@Maisey1: Same for us. There were three heavy smokers in the house. We heavily cleaned everything, walls included. It took a little time. I like a well scented house, so I burned candles, etc., and it eventually went away and was replaced with our own house smell. The house was only a year and a half old when we bought it, so it wasn't like years of smoke had imbedded the walls.

@donnatella: We rented a home before moving into our current home and it smelled old and like moth balls. Since painting wasn't an option I just went to Bath and Body and got those wallflower plug ins for every room. Those really helped keep the house smelling a little better.

@BearfinMy suggestion here, my friend, is if you and yours are interested in this new casa, either have the current owners pay for a thorough, deep, professional cleaning - and YOU call around to get the top rated Company that you feel adequate and comfortable with, or have them simply deduct that cost from the Asking Price.........Then, prior to moving in, take several days to Field Day that mofo.........From top to bottom........Oh, and "Field Day" is a lil' Military (USMC) terminology used when thoroughly cleaning one's Barracks....  And it betta be clean to pass Inspection.... 4951

EW. I hate that smell. I guess if you are IN LOVE with the house and realize it will be a process to get all the smell out, and it might not happen completely.....It would just be a huge turn off to me. But USE it as bargaining power to get some serious dollars off. That kind off thing is a deal breaker for a lot of people. 4951

Being an ex smoker, my biggest concern would be that the smell might go away to you but others might still smell it. We smoked inside at an apartment and to us, we couldn't smell it but everyone else could. Everyone tells us that our house smells new (it is), however we don't smell the new house smell anymore because we are used to it. Either way, good luck! 4951

@Ray - we have looked at 22 homes. I'm not kidding. You would not believe what is out there right now. We are in a higher $ range too. One house (Kings Point) had black mold growing out of every single vent, Another had holes in the wall, another had FLIES everywhere, bedrooms are tiiny, roof leaks, all pool - no yard, pool decking separating from pool, foundation issues, etc. It has been a real eye opener! This one, while stinky, is fairly new and the lay out is really great, and it has the perfect yard for pups and kiddos... 4951
