Help!  My 16 month old fell out of his crib tonight.  He is okay, but now we have this to deal with...He is tall for his age, so even with the crib mattress lowered to its lowest setting, he was still able to get out.  His bedroom is upstairs so I am terrified that he will get out of his bed and out of his room then down the stairs!  For the night we turned the crib around backwards (the back is higher than the front) and we pushed it up into the corner and pushed a tall dresser against the final side, so he is safe for the night.  But we can't keep it like that.  I am 30 weeks pregnant and will never be able to lift him out of it on my own!  Crib tents are discontinued so that is out.  Putting him in a toddler bed is out because he will literally tear his room apart if given the chance since he is only 16 months.  What are my other options?! 4951

I have baby gates at the top and bottom of my stairs.  So I can lock the upstairs gate at night if need be.  And shut the other bedroom and bathroom doors.   4951

I feel for you, dear girl! My advice - first of all, take a good, deep breath. 4 seconds in, hold 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds. Now, let's look at the priorities involved. 1. Keeping the child safe and 2. keeping you safe from falling over things he pulls out during his "excursions"  Addressing #1, preventing access to the stairs, etc. - make sure you have a monitor and that he is not able to open his door. When my youngest started climbing out, there was nothing we could do to keep him in. He used to leap off the top rail! Then he figured out that made too much noise and he began climbing down.#2. - Is there a way to put what he really doesn't need to be into in the closet or such? We had to actually clear my DS room of diapers and changing supplies. Everything with wheels on it went out, too. Later, he climbed over 2 stacked baby gates on the outside of his door once he figured out how to get it open. Not trying to scare you, my son is now 25 and did not get stiches until he was in high school. He was careful enough to avoid injuries all that time.  I am confident yours will be fine, too. 4951

Mine climbed out of his crib before he could walk and had to go to the Dr. for stitches to his busted brow. His crib was already as low as it could go. We ended up just putting the mattress on the floor and reversing his door knob so we could lock it at night. Between the stairs and the pool, I was terrified that he would get out and hurt himself. (we cleared the room of everything to keep it safe)Maybe they have invented something by now for this problem, that baby is now 37 with a baby of his own.  4951

Take the bottom out and drop the mattress to the floor, put some blankets folded under it to raise it to fill in the gap with the crib. It'll give you a week until the "tunnel out" method is figured out. We had that prob with our son, 14.5 months and would climb out with no prob with his mama 30w preggers. I eventually had enough of his Houdini escapes, bought a toddler bed for him and slept in the room with him for several months to adjust to his new freedom. 4951

I think its time for a toddler bed. At this point, the crib just isnt safe anymore. I would clear the room of anything he could get into and put a baby gate in the door...screw into the door frame. Use a baby monitor to listen for him waking up. Also a baby gate at the top of stairs for added security. 4951

Yep. If they climb out, it's time for a new bed. They just have to learn bedtime is bedtime..no getting out of bed to play..easier said than done.

Put a doorknob cover over the doorknob so he can't open it himself and gates on the stairs. 4951

Doesnt matter if he is 16 months or three. Your worries will still be the same. If he is climbing out, Baby proof the entire room and until you get a toddler bed just remove crib and put mattress on floor. Put tall baby gate at his door entry and at stairs. Enjoy listening to him play till wee hours next month or two....lol

Both my girls were out of crib by a year old. My youngest was caught stacking the few nighttime stuffies up to use as a ladder...lol she couldnt walk yet either. 4951

Both of mine did this- I think every kid does. We baby proofed the room- our crib turned into a toddler bed ( lower to the floor with smaller rails) AND we turned the door knob around so that the lock was on the outside and loved them in. We also put a baby gate at the top of the stairs for extra insurance. When they were old enough to understand we taught them to stay in bed 4951

Yep, what @Burnsway @Boobear and @LoveNC said.  Time to upgrade to baby bed and either lock his room and use monitor, get something he can't get through at the top of the stairs, or move his mattress onto the floor of your room.  We opted for #1 and it worked well for us.  4951

You probably already thought of this but make sure any dressers or furniture in the room is secured so he can't pull it over on him if he tries to climb. If there are low windows make sure he can't work the locks. 4951

As pita as it was...when both my girls did it...EVERYTHING was moved to another room except safe toys and bed and blankets and few little things and all sockets were covered and all mini blind cords were cut or tied up. Their room became one big crib.. LoL. It was a pain to do but I slept well at night. Even if they got up and played....I slept knowing unless they ate the carpet or paint or grew wings and learned to fly over the gate they were safe...lol
