Is anyone here a vet or can recommend one that is very cheap or does payment plans? I have a sweet Ridgeback mix that I rescued and when I took her to the vet to get her updated on her shots she tested positive for heartworms. It is very expensive for the treatment and I would hate to see her get sick. She seems very healthy and fine but I know it's just a matter of time before it gets worse. I want to treat it now while she's healthy. Please! Any suggestions would help. Thanks! Emoticon

Did it come through a rescue group? They usually have vets that give them deals. 4951

No it was someone in my neighborhood that was going to take her to the pound or dump her... my husband brought her home b/c he felt bad for her.... I am assuming they found her or got her and didn't want the responsibility of her. So we rescued her on our own. Now I am desperate for help b/c I love her and want to keep her! Emoticon  4951

Summerwood Veterinary Clinic.   My pups Heartworm treatment was $871.00.  That is a lot but not as much as some places.  You may also consider care credit...A lot of vets use that for payment plans. 4951

The 'hard' treatment is expensive and restrictive to your pet's activity. Ask your vet if he is familiar wth other treatments.
Google Doxycycline and heartworms.

I second what Lola says...There are other less expensive treatments.  Get a second opinion.   4951

Update: I spoke with a lady at the Conroe Animal Shelter and she gave me the best advice and told me most vets just are out to make money on the fast kill heart worm treatment she gave me lots of wonderful resources and I have learned a lot about heart worms and treatment. Hopefully this helps! Thanks everyone for your concern! Emoticon  4951

If you do slow kill just keep their nutrition good... Never be late on the pills. Every 29 days. Pills last longer if dog is negative but a positive dog shouldnt be an hour late. Keep extremly close eye on him.

I supplimented and supported my dogs immune system with high grade essential oils(only ones labeled for ingestion and not store bought) and food grade diotomaciouse earth (NOT pool grade)also.

We did slow kill with our husky and he was clear and tested negative about 2 years later but it can take much longer. Just depends on what stage they are in.

It has risk but so does fast kill. 4951

We have done the slow treatment (doxycycline and Advantage Multi or Heartgard) and 2 turned negative in under 9 months. I have known of many with similar success.  Our most recent one is still positive after 11 months but we expect/hope that she will be negative soon.  Educate yourself and pick whichever seems right for you and your dog.  I wish you success with whichever treatment you choose. 4951

I'm guessing that the slow kill is better.   4951
