Swallow tailed kite today, it was playing in the wind with such grace and easy, you could see the waves of wind come and go as it surfed along the trees. It was beautiful!!!

I have seen them three times in the last three years in North Woodland Hills. Twice I have seen a kite west of Hidden Pines and another time just east of Hidden Pines. I did a search online and found a website that tracks them.

I've never seen a swallow tail kite, but whenever we drive in a rural area, I watch for hawks and owls.  It's easier to spot them during the winter and the trees have dropped their leaves.  Back when I worked upriver from New Orleans, I saw a bald eagle.  There were a couple of eagle nests west of the NO airport.  Bald eagles have made a tremendous come-back!While in west Texas on the Frio River, I saw my first roadrunner on a dirt road and a golden eagle sitting on a fence post. 4951

Not a great pic, but we saw a hawk having his squirrel dinner in the neighbors front yard a while back. That and the owls are the only ones I've seen around here. Although we did spot a wild turkey on Northpark Dr once. Need to find that pic as well.

I would love to see the owl that hangs out at our place.  I hear it frequently but have never been able to spot it. 4951

Every once in a while, I could spot our local owl. Haven't seen him (her) in a LOOONG time. Haven't heard any hooting either. Maybe too much competition from the stray cats? 4951

@FairieMae:
OR ate a poisoned rat. People don't realize that rats and mice don't immediately die from eating poison bait. They can live for days - the toxin builds up in their systems- they basically die from liver failure. In the mean time they wander around ( appearing drunk) and can become prey to cats, dogs and birds of prey- if this happens then the other animals/ birds end up poisoned and dead 4951
