@ET: Â Very true and a good reminder. Â Unfortunately, where we go to visit family, there is only a single little family-run hotel at each place and those aren't on those travel sites. Â When the kids were younger and we went on vacation, we would have loved the travel websites but they didn't exist back then. Â Telephoning and asking for specials or discounts was the best way back then. Â Sometimes I forget how much time has passed and that new methods are available. Â
@Retired_Engineer: I stock Hilton points so I usually start there. I also cross reference using the travel sites to see if I'm getting screwed. Ton of information out there, Hotels.com, Travelocity, etc. Also use Trip Advisor to see the ratings. Lot of BS to wade through but changed hotels more than a few times due to a slew of crappy ratings.
