Friday night our plumbing backed up. We called a local plumber that we'd used in the past and he promised to come out on Saturday afternoon. After he failed to show up Saturday and didn't return calls and texts on Sunday. I looked online for another company. I found one that advertised a $69 "Drain Cleaning Special" on their web site. When I called to schedule the service the person that answered wouldn't confirm the "special" or provide a cost window of any type. That made me a little more than suspicious. When the service rep arrived I asked what the charge would be. His answer was "$215". I pulled out my phone, showed him the online add, and asked for an explanation. His answer was "They run specials without telling us - we have no way of knowing what they put out there" I asked if he'd do the work as advertised for $69. His answer was "Sure, all you have to do is ask for it." No arguing, no negotiating, or pushing back. He didn't even call to verify the "special" - which leads me to assume he was more than well aware of it. While I admire his honesty and acceptance, one has to wonder how many older or shy people have paid a huge fee because they didn't want question or press the issue. I know my wife, sweet thing that she is, would have accepted it at face value and never asked.  4951

That's a common trick to get $215 out of you for a $69 service.  You can also purchase a snake with a crank handle (the snake is in a drum) for around $20.  Snaking the drain takes about 5 minutes. 4951

That's how John Moore did it with me.  Then after they snaked it, it was backed up again that evening.  They refunded the fee. 4951

Hotels also do this.  Over the years, when we call to make a reservation, we learned we have to ask if they have any specials going on.  You have to ask for the specials or they just give you their normal rate. 4951

@ET:  Very true and a good reminder.  Unfortunately, where we go to visit family, there is only a single little family-run hotel at each place and those aren't on those travel sites.  When the kids were younger and we went on vacation, we would have loved the travel websites but they didn't exist back then.  Telephoning and asking for specials or discounts was the best way back then.  Sometimes I forget how much time has passed and that new methods are available.  Emoticon

@Retired_Engineer: I stock Hilton points so I usually start there.  I also cross reference using the travel sites to see if I'm getting screwed. Ton of information out there, Hotels.com, Travelocity, etc.  Also use Trip Advisor to see the ratings.  Lot of BS to wade through but changed hotels more than a few times due to a slew of crappy ratings.

Before I call for any service I check on line , the back of the phone book for coupons & our local magazines carry coupons too. But as for plumbers we have had the same one for over 23 years , he does a good job for a fair price & he's as honest as can be.  He's talking about retiring & I will panic when he does . 4951

@ET:  I second Lescon.  They did good work at a reasonable cost for us.

@WJo:

Would you please share the name of his business? I need a good, honest plumber as I'm sure a lot of people out here do. 4951

Lescon charged me to come out and fix a plumbing problem-- the service man did not fix the problem but charged me a trip charge. I will not be using Lescon again and would never recommend them. 4951
