I just started reading a memoir... and in one section the author talks about the things she has learned growing up - the lessons of life.

Some are silly and light-hearted and others are deeper. The keyed car thread got me thinking about this again this morning.

Some of this author's Secrets of Adulthood are:
It's important to be nice to everyone.
Do good, feel good.
Bring a sweater.
You don't have to be good at everything.
If you can't find something, clean up.

What are your secrets of adulthood? What lessons have you learned the hard way?

Two things that come to mind are:

1. If you haven't used it in several months, you don't need it, (note to some on here, this doesn't pertain to body parts)

2. To be successful it's more important to surround yourself with smart people than it is to know everything. (a boss told me that years ago and he was never so correct) 4951

@HollyHobby: These two suggestions are very wise, especially if you have a low tolerance for ********.
It's nice to be able to walk away if you want to.  Never allow yourself to live paycheck to paycheck. You basically become a slave, to debt, to employer, etc. 4951

Several good ones are already listed.Think and act honestly and with integrity. It's OK to say "I don't know, but I can find out and get back to you".  I learned that people and bosses respond better to that than you guessing or making up an answer.  The key part is to get back to them!Be willing to tell your boss that "your plate is full" but ONLY when it's honestly full.  The way your boss responds will tell you what to expect in the future.Keep your promises.Define your priorities and focus on the highest priorities.  Periodically re-evaluate your priorities because new things may have popped up or lower priorities are now higher.Balance work and personal time.  You work to provide for yourself and your family.  Just make sure work leaves you some personal/family time. 4951

1) If everything is important, then nothing is important.

This goes for material possessions, childrens' artwork, and scheduling commitments.

2) Food is either medicine or poison. It can't be both, and it can't be neither.

Dont waste time worrying if the glass is half full or half empty.  Just pick the glass up and take a drink.  4951

@Odin:

That but I mean more about being true to yourself. Not having to pretend you are something you aren't so another can be happy. Lots of people do this. 4951
