I'm not sure how they calculate it, but they were reporting on the news this morning that an estimated 240 billion gallons of water fell over the Houston metro area yesterday, compared to the Memorial Day flooding, which was an estimated 160 billion gallons of water. 4951

@retired_engineer counted each drop one at a time. He's a counting guru.

@jax:  I have such a bad headache and my eyes hurt after that effort!  I hope we don't get any more rain for a day or two!  I had to use a counting clicker with every appendage.... and I do mean EVERY appendage.

@djchavez0921: That's funny, because that's the first thing I thought when I saw it on TV this morning.
How in the world would someone come up with that number so quickly?
It's a good thing I didn't have RetiredEngineer's phone number. I would have called him at 4:00 AM!

An interesting side discussion I've been having with my wife has been talking about setting rain barrels under the downspouts on my pation roof.
My wife figures it will
1. Reduce our water bill
2. Help the drainage problem in my back yard
3. Improve the overall flooding problem in Houston.

I wish I had a water collection system. 4951

It would be water for the garden and yard, thus saving money. A water barrel system is smart. 4951

@Odin: Yeah, it's a good idea but now my DW is obsessed with the idea of rationalizing it.

@Safety44: I've thought about it for years, but didn't want to spend the upfront cost. But I did actively try to see if I could go "off the grid" via solar, but was told by a consultant that I had too many trees to make it worthwhile.  and I'm not going to yank my trees.  Give the guy credit, he could have sold me solar and then let me take the hit for not getting enough power.  Honest guy.

@Odin: Many people under estimate the work involved in keeping solar panels clean and efficient. I would suppose pollen, pine needles and leaves would be as detrimental to overall efficiency as the shade.
We built some out in California for off shore platforms and they had to be cleaned continuously due to sea water condensation and salt deposits.

@Safety44: Yeah, the guy told me the pine needles would be a big problem.
If I move somewhere in which solarcity operates, and it makes sense at the time... I may still go for it.I like the idea of being energy independent.  Bit of a prepper....granted, having solar panels would make one a target for Zombies. 4951

When I was ND back in 84, they put in a heated field turf on the football field, with a water system underneath. When it snowed, they would heat the turf, allowing the water to drain on through. They'd then take that water and filter it to the rest of the campus. It was pretty cool for the 80's. Then they eventually built a dome...oh well.

@Odin:  It is a smart idea, but to make it payout, it would have to be pretty big collection system.  Just watering a yard takes a lot of water.   When my dad was growing up in south LA, they had a large above-ground cistern to collect rainwater from the roof.  That was their source of drinking water, bathing water, etc. Any solids/dirt/pollen/etc would eventually settle to the bottom, so the outlet on the cistern was several inches above the bottom. About once a year, they drained it and someone had to get inside to clean out the sludge that built up  They finally got running water and electricity when he was in high school.  They let nature water the yard.My best friends parent's had a fishing camp with a cistern.  They didn't
completely trust it for drinking water but they had it connected so
they could flush the toilet.  The camp was on an island in the swamp so the toilet was piped about a hundred feet away from the camp and just dumped in the swamp.  Times were different then!

"How in the world would someone come up with that number so quickly?"Estimated average rate of rain fall x average estimated time of rain x estimated area where rain fell. The estimates are pretty good, since they're based on data from rain measuring stations all over the area. 4951
