Puppies alway bite and chew, redirect him with a chew toy so he'll learn that is what he needs to chew on instead of your hand. When they are teething they need to chew on something to relieve the pain and small raw hide bones are great for that as well. Good luck, the stage doesn't last long! 4951

Not sure dos eat mussels but you should not have to purchase a muzzle.  There are lots of things you can google to get answers.  Wet and freeze a sock is one thing that can be used.  They teeth just like children. Here is a link that may be helpful.   http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/dog-care/common-dog-behavior-issues/mouthing-nipping-and-biting-puppies

4 month old puppy

@princecharming: Our 5 month old still bites, we just firmly tell her no, and if she continues, ignore her.
Puppies bite, it's their way. Ours is finally losing her pin teeth (see Echo Stuff thread) and that sure is nice, those pin teeth do hurt and can slice your skin (really, you should see my arms). Also their claws are pretty sharp, so don't forget a nail clip to help that out.Plus we buy raw hide sticks, cow ears, raw hide skin chews and a few toys like a knobby ball, and a couple tennis balls. 4951

Make sure you are not using your hands as a toy to play with the puppy. If he is just randomly biting you then suddenly jerk your hand (or whatever he is biting) away and give him a very stern NO. Redirect his attention to a chew toy. 4951

Good advice above . We also use bitter Apple spray. A squirt of that in the mouth ( never ever in the face/eyes) and and a firm ( not angry) "No Bite". Should only take once or twice before just the verbal command does the trick.  . We also use that to teach No bark and we spray it on thingswedont want chewed. 4951

This stage will pass. They need to chew. Give them chew toys and keep things that they shouldn't chew, like shoes, out of their reach. We had one puppy that bit our ankles and it really hurt. After her puppy stage, she quit. She turned out to be the best dog ever. 4951

@Jpgurl: This - be consistent and it will work.  Don't play with them using your hand as a toy or they will think it's a toy.  If that doesn't work, I saw on youtube that a pipe wrench works pretty well, but that you end up with a large  vet bill, which you can then sell to Inside Edition...  Just kidding on the last part.

With six foster puppies in the house, I have lots of chewing, scratching etc to correct.  They even hurt each other with those sharp puppy teeth.  I am with Fofa, I give plenty of teething toys, rawhides, and chewy treats to redirect.  I do clip their nails every week too, cannot wait till final shots so I can walk them and let the pavement wear them down! 4951

@princecharming: You have to train your puppy.  He has to know your hands are off limits just lite the cough legs are off limits.  He does not do this because he loves you.  He does it because he is teething and needs to chew on something.  He needs lots of puppy teething toys and when he tries to chew on you, you need to say no and redirect him to one of his toys.  You have a 4-month-old puppy, a blank slate.  You have the power to help this puppy be a good dog.  You might want to take your pup somewhere for training,  I'm sure he is old enough.  Emoticonets Mart offers dog training.  4951

One of our puppies favorite while she is teething is the knobby ball.I probably should buy one of those nylabone for teething for her, our other puppies (except one) always liked those also. Echo however seems to be going through most of the sticks in our yard. 4951

Puppies need hours of teething a day. If you dont give it to them your skin and furniture pays the price. Get you a few kongs. Fill them up with babyfood and kibble and freeze them. Let them have 1 every few hours. 4951

May I add...a muzzle for puppy teething is about as wrong as duct taping a childs mouth shut for teething....lol

Teething is not dangerouse biting. Muzzles are for preventing bites. 4951

@Maisey1:  Be careful about jerking your hand away!   That could result in a long set of cuts/scratches.one thing I have done and it works well:  when the puppy bites on your hand, use your thumb inside his mouth, with your other fingers under his jaw, and press down on their tongue (firmly but not painfully).  They usually learn pretty quick to leave the hands alone.
