Hello! My husband and I are looking to move into newer development homes (170-200s) and are trying to get a feel for the neighborhood and their schools. I currently have a 1st grader at Bear Branch. What are your thoughts on Kings Mill and Oakhurst neighborhoods + their schools? Is their a major difference in Humble ISD vs New Caney ISD schools? (after all, it's all public schooling). ANY input is definitely appreciated. It's our first big purchase and we are not taking this lightly! Emoticon 4951

Well I homeschool so cant help you much but isnt oakhurst montgomery taxes. Can make a huge difference on your monthly payment. I think from listening to all my friends I would have to say the schools are pretty comparable. 4951

Well, they're higher due to having to pay MUD taxes. 4951

I know a lot of people that have made the move from Kingwood to Oakhurst and never heard them complain about the taxes....may not be significant.  None of them have made the move with children, usually downsizing....may say something about the schools. 4951

Montgomery Co was higher when we were looking. Downside to the area right now will be if trying to sell in the near future (up to a decade) and competing with builders. 4951

Harris county and Humble ISD taxes (combined property taxes for Kingwood proper) are in the 3% range.  Maybe someone living in Montgomery county can speak to the same range for their county/district.  Mud taxes, if any, by default are not deductible from income taxes so they should be excluded from this calculation.  As far as schools go, I can't speak to it but there are several regulars here with kids in Porter schools.  I do know that Porter High School has nearly half of their student body listed as "economically disadvantaged", whatever that means.  You can review standardized test scores and faculty tenure on their website. 4951

I would stay away from New Caney schools...elementary school education does not prepare for middle school. Porter High School is not as academicly strong as New Caney High School. There pre-AP and AP alignment are non existent. 4951

@Ashley1640:

I would not put my children in New Caney ISD if I had a choice. Go to schooldiggers and great schools online. From what I have heard and seen, KW schools rate much better than NCISD schools. 4951

Also, public schooling varies greatly from district to district and from school to school. 4951

We recently moved here and I did extensive research and review of best schools/test scores. reviews, etc.  Humble ISD is far superior to New Caney schools as well as Porter.  Look on greatschools.com and also you can go to the district websites and find test scores.  Kingwood High and Kpark High School score extremely well on standardized testing.  New Caney and Porter do not compare.  The middle schools in Kingwood that are the best are Creekwood and Riverwood.  Bear Branch might have homes in your range, but they are not new.  There is also a subdivision off Mills Branch called Woodspring Forest that might be in your price range.  We really wanted to live out farther away from the hustle and bustle of Kingwood/Humble, but the schools got worse the farther we went. 4951
