Has anyone added a 2nd water meter?  I am thinking about doing this for the sprinklers and pool.  Any details or advice?  Will the city add a meter and I get a plumber (my cost) to connect up or is it all my cost?  Any advice is appreciated. 4951

Good idea. Price of water is like gold. I want to do this and have done some prelim work. If you use more than 8 thousand gallons/month outside, peaking over 20 for a couple months in summer when it is dry, payout is about a year. $1250 cost upfront plus maybe some grass replacement. They designate which licensed plumber you use. You don't save the entire water volume cost just the sewage cost you don't need on that water. Go on water website for details so you can run your numbers. 4951

I added a second meter for pool and lawn-- payout is good. Yard water does not run through the sewer system to the price is 1/2 the costs of Houston City water. Up front costs seemed high but payout is still good. You must have a licensed plumber install the meter. Cholab is spot on. 4951

I had a second water meter installed for the lawn irrigation/sprinklers. There are instructions on how to do this on the COH website.   You should first pick (get bids) a city-approved plumber from a list on the website.  You then order the second meter from the city of Houston and provide the name of your plumber.  The new meter cannot be larger than your existing meter.  I think it cost about $200 for the meter.  Your selected plumber will then pick up the meter and schedule the work.  Once they make the new connection to the water main and install the meter, they have to leave the hole open so a city inspector can check it.  Then they can fill the hole in.  This was two days for us.  Expect to pay $800-1,000 for the meter and plumber.  Connecting the new meter to your pool and lawn piping will depend on their location and will cost extra.Since I had the lawn system put in with all new landscaping and lawn, I knew I had to water daily for about a month.  The new meter paid for itself in about 6 months. 4951

I don't know what it costs to put a second meter in but I sure can tell you that your water bill will be cut.  Luckily, the house we purchased had a second meter for the pool and sprinkler system plus a few spickets of 'cheap' water.  Water is not cheap. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Retired_EngineerWe are in the process of finishing the inside of our pool and in 1-2 weeks we will be ready to fill it back up (aprox 40,000 gallons). Do you remember which plumber that you used and how long ago did you have this done?

@saltwaterfisherman:  I had to dig through my Quicken file to find this.  We had it done in Nov 2013 with Mickie Service and it cost $1,000 for the connection to a second water meter.  A 5/8" meter cost $188 and I bought that about two months previously.  The delay between the two was due to the city needing a copy of the permit for my installed lawn irrigation system that had just been installed by a contractor.  The contractor "couldn't find it" in their files.  I think they had to go back to the COH and reapply because they were supposed to have given the permit to me and never did.  The cost of installing the meter depends on how deep the water main is and where your existing water meter is located. My landscape contractor had told me it wasn't worth having a second water meter put in, so I didn't initially.  My first month's water bill of using the sprinklers every day was just under $600.  That's when I decided to add the second water meter. The COH is pretty picky about permits and inspections, so don't be surprised if you run into this issue.

Thanks everyone for all of the good information.  With a pool and running of the sprinklers I am going to go ahead and start the process of getting the second meter.   What I'm concerned about is the permit for the existing irrigation system.  This didn't come with the house when we purchased it in 2014 (It's an older system).  But will see what happens and how it all goes.   4951

We have been trying to decide if putting in a second water meter would be a good thing to do.  Thanks to all of you for the great information.  I am now convinced a second meter is right for us. 4951

I looked on the COH website and I couldn`t find anything about who to contact to get the ball rolling. I also have a old sprinkler system and I don`t know where to get the plans or if there was ever one filed. 4951

@saltwaterfisherman:  Tryhttps://edocs.publicworks.houstontx.gov/documents/divisions/resource/ucs/lawn_meter_residential.pdfhttps://edocs.publicworks.houstontx.gov/documents/divisions/planning/development/application_for_water_meter.pdfThe COH website has changed and I cannot find a page with instructions.  I remember I called them and they told me the process.  Also, the folks at Mickey Service Company are very familiar with what COH needs, so give them a call as well. Mickey Service Company can probably help answer your questions:http://www.mickieservice.com/residential-irrigation-water-meters.htmledited:  @andreweggplant:  I just noticed that you already posted the same first two links!
