I've got a totally empty flower bed that was already here when we got the house. Can anyone suggest a low maintenance plant that spreads so I won't have to buy too many of them, but does well in the shade? Something with flowers would be ideal. 4951

Geraniums do well here. It isn't invasive and doesn't spread on its own, but it is super duper easy to propagate. Just snap off a stalk, stick it in the dirt and water. They do well in the heat and the cold. They flower nicely in a variety of colors. 4951

What is that really pretty purple plant I've seen around Kingwood? They're low and look like they spread. Purple leaves, vine like. 4951

@OneHappyMrs:

If you talking about the bushes that are spanning the bridge on Adam St headed out of the back of the neighborhood, that's Loropetalum. It does well in sun or shade and can be maintained to stay low and compact or spread into a bigger hedge type bush. It's very versatile and has a bright pink fringe type flower about twice a year. @comeandtakeit you can also put azaleas in. They only bloom for a short period but can get fairly large to fill in space. You can also put in impatiens for some color, although they don't spread. 4951

Foxtail ferns make a nice contrast with other plants.  They are maintenance-free and can live through pretty cold winters. 4951

A really good, very low maintenance cover is the wandering jew.However it does need to be contained.Mine has green leaves with purple stems.You can take a number of the cuttings, poke a hole in the ground. Stuff each cutting in the hole, keep it water until it catches, and a year later it will fill in.You are welcome to as many cuttings as you think you need depending on how fast you want it to fill in. But usually one every couple/few feet is all that is required if you can wait a year.It grows in shade or full sun. But spreads faster in full sun.Each stalk gets a little purple flower on it quite frequently. I usually some each day. Full ShadeFull Sun 4951
