My 4 year old bumped a tooth maybe about 9 months ago (damaged the gum a little and tooth had a tiny wiggle to it), and his dentist said let's wait and see what it does, it might re-implant itself and be fine (x-ray was not bad).  Well, it was fine for a while, and I guess he has bumped it again because it is really loose now.At his 6 month dental check-up in February his dentist said it needs to come out.  She gave 3 options:1. Numb with a topical, then inject gum to fully numb, then pull2. Gas sedation, pull3. Papoose board, and then do option number oneKiddo just turned 4.  He's not old enough to be told to tough it out (and follow through with being tough).  He recently pulled a vaccine out of his leg at his 4 year old checkup!  There's no way option #1 would work.  I don't feel comfortable with option #2.  So dentist said let's do #3 - hell to the no.  I just said "okay," but left without making an appointment.Anyone ever been in this situation?  The tooth is maybe 60% wiggly - so it's not hanging by a thread... otherwise I'd pull it myself (there are no adult teeth pushing up yet).  I'm just worried about the aftercare - he'll probably need an antibiotic when in comes out. I noticed a change in the gumline this weekend, so I really need to figure this out soon.Should I call a Pediatric Oral Surgeon?  Anyone know of one?  4951

@Fallon

Thanks! I really want to let it come out on it's own, but it's not progressing naturally, I guess, because there is not an adult tooth pushing it up and out. It's in loose tooth purgatory! Emoticon The gumline is now lower and red for that one tooth, so I hope that is not an early sign of infection. The tooth is not discolored, though.

It's been a little over a month since the dentist wanted it out. I hate this. Emoticon He's taking a nap now, I want to go yank it! What if I damage a nerve or something? Boo.

Yeah, I can't believe that the papoose was an option. Torture. 4951

@terilyntx:

Get a second opinion. I'm extremely uncomfortable with options 2 and 4 for a 4 year old. I would be even more uncomfortable with a dentist recommending these options for a young child without evidence of infection, disease, etc.

Call another dentists and maybe you can run him by and just get another opinion.  I would be worrying about it too!I hate it when our little ones have to deal with things like this.

@Fallon:

Thank you! I'll call some others. I never thought I'd get so worried about one little tooth. Gah! You've made me feel better about it though! I hope the gum is doing its thing so the tooth can fall out. There are so many scary stories out there when I'm googling this. Wah! 4951

My story would be one of the scary stories. Keeping it simple, my daughter pushed a front tooth deeper into the gum during a trip and fall in the house. The result was a year or maybe 2 of the two front teeth being uneven. Her ortho suggested waiting for the adult tooth to push the baby tooth out. Instead the damaged tooth diverted the adult tooth, resulting in removal of the damaged tooth. The adult tooth grew in uneven, meaning we now have the joys (& expense) of braces. My thoughts would be a second or even third opinion are important. You may be advised to wait or you may be given some better options than the ones you currently have. 4951

Number 1 and 2 maybe....depends. Number 3 hell to the hell no is right. Go see dr sykes in cleveland with downtown dental. Nobody researches dentist like I do. She will be your safest and best to use in a situation like this. The dentist fallon recommended falls on my ok list but he generally seems full on new patients. Jones family denistry in cleveland I can recommend too. They are the only 3 I will recommend at this time. 4951

Gosh, I don't know... But it really is crazy. This is my first time around with this (thank goodness). Seems like it's from the medieval period, though!! There was a recent post/report about a 4 year old Houston girl who has suffered severe brain damage from being restrained in one. So sad.

@terilyntx: actually the brain damage was from misuse of sedative and over drugged . They didnt know she was having seizures because she was restrained. The papoose itself did not cause the seizures. Never the less the use of them needs to stop. Had she not been restrained and kept up with her vitals they would have known what was happening. But these dentist act like they are working on a car and need that job done fast to get to the next one for more money on un needed work. They dont give a damn the outcome. Sick bastards....everyone of them!
