I'd like to give an overwhelming shout out the the people (male and female) that have dedicated their life to a career of taking care of our unfortunate old and sick people.
Every day, I get to see nurses and care givers providing a service that is way beyond what their salary compensates them for.
If it wasn't for their devotion, I don't know what our sick and elderly would do.
This includes nursing home personnel as well as hospital staff and the people who clean up as well as the registered nurses and doctors.
They all deserve our highest regards.
Thank you. 4951

I agree. It breaks my heart to see elderly people in wheelchairs parked against the side of a wall at nursing homes with no one visiting them or interacting with them.  Emoticon 4951

@terilyntx: I think everybody needs a hug now and then.

My heart takes a jump every time I see someone in that situation smile. I think of how I would feel if I was sick all the time or had no family to look after me.

I'd be lost without my family, especially my wife!

I hope this Halloween my DD doesn't decide she is too old to trick or treat and that the nursing home up on Green Oak does the trick or treating again.  That was great seeing all the happy faces of the seniors that are living there.  Some were decked out in their Halloween shirts and others had decorations.  It was fun for the kids and for the residence.  When my DD was in girl scouts we went to another nursing home and played Bingo, did a craft and had an ice cream socials with the residence that wanted to attend.  They were all so happy we were there. 4951

I hear ya. I just get annoyed with generalizations... The 'now days it's I'm too busy.' Who knows what is going on in a family... What has happened... The circumstances... 4951

I was very fortunate that my older sister only lived a few miles from our parents.  My sister lost her husband to a heart attack in 2001, just about the time our parents needed extra help. She took great care of them in their remaining years.  My father always said he never wanted to be in a nursing home and he wanted to die at home.  My sister made that possible. 4951

@terilyntx: I understand. Too often, it's true, we are too busy.
I thank God every day that I had several heart attacks 17 years ago that forced my retirement. The best thing that ever happened to me because I had to come home and was able to spend the last five years of my father's life with him.
Changed my way of thinking forever.
I went back to work after he passed, but I look at things much different now.

That was very caring of her. It's not easy to take care of a loved one at home even with help. You really give up your life for the time being. It's all worth it though. 4951

@terilyntx:  It's not just a matter of "too busy".  Distance can be a factor.  Even being just 5 hours away is too much for helping in day to day things (in our case).

This is kind of a sore subject with me. My oma spent the last few years in an assisted living facility when she really shouldn't have. It makes me angry and it also makes me slightly regret moving to texas. Had we stayed in Ohio I would have insisted she move in with us. She deserved way better treatment then she was given by her so called son and daughters. But I need to not think of the what ifs. I did the best I could and took care of her when she was in ohio. That should not have been my responsibility as a mother in her 20s trying to raise my own family but I cherished every moment I had with her and so did my own little family. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Understand all too well. I had a hard time arranging for a few of my brothers and sisters to come down here for mom's 90 th birthday.
I know how it is because I put nearly 20,000 miles a year on my truck just driving between here with my mother and the rest of my family in Missouri.
I'm just thankful I have the time and money (and health) to be able to do it.
