Everyone's grieving process is different. And I wouldn't think you could ever "replace" what is lost. At some point, everyone moves forward and finds a way to fill a void. Some sooner than others.

I always looked at it as a way of honoring their memory. What better way to do so than to take the love that they gave you and turn it around and give it to another animal that might have never had a chance to know what it's like to be loved? This way, their memory is carried on in the addition of the new fur baby. Just like people will their stuff to loved ones left behind and even donate organs, I could totally see a dog that has so unconditionally loved their human wanting them to be happy again and willing their stuff to another animal that may fill the void left by their death.
Pretty sure I'm not quite explaining that properly, but hopefully yall get the point.
