I sold a vehicle in June of last year. I got a bill of sale from the buyer and immediately filed the online form telling the State of Texas that the vehicle was transferred. So far I have gotten at least two dozen toll bills from various toll road agencies across Texas where the buyer has run the toll gates.  I've spent hours mailing, faxing and emailing these agencies to explain that it's no longer my vehicle. So, as it turns out, it's important to remove both your license plate and your window sticker when you sell a vehicle. Get a bill of sale and fill in the online "vehicle transfer notification" form as well. The link to that form is https://vision21.txdmv.gov/Vehicle/MainTransferNotification.aspx.  4951

I always thought it best to meet for the sale and do the transfer at the same time..at the court house. If they dont have the money to immediately pay the taxea and make the transfer...dont sell to them. 4951

@BooBear: That's a good idea. I was too trusting.

I had a similar problem in Oklahoma.
Someone stole my license plate.
Luckily I reported it to the police because it was obvious it was unbolted from the car,

About four months later, I started getting tickets from Oklahoma for running toll gates. Took be a couple of months to figure it out and even after I did, it took forever to convince Oklahoma courts that it wasn't me running the toll gates.

I told then what car I drove but they wouldn't acknowledge if they had photos of the vehicle and if it was a white Cadillac in the photo.

Finally got it cleared up but I think the bill had reached nearly $2,000 (including the fines)

Like everything else, the courts are more interested in money than in justice. 4951

@Safety44: So you know where I'm at with this! The DMV told me that, once the buyer finally comes in to register the vehicle in his name, all of the tolls and the associated fines will become his bill. I guess he thinks he's getting away with something... so far he has, but I hope it comes back to bite him.

@QueenB: Yes, but in the mean time, it's your background that is jeopardized by incorrect information.
Bad for you if you get stopped for doing something like running a stop sign and the records jump up that you have thousands of dollars and multiple offenses against your name,
I've actually spent the night in jail for other similar misunderstandings years ago.
It just sucks that there isn't a way to stop them in their tracks. They may never reqlgister the vehicle,

@Safety44: Right?! Happily, I have been able to remove each and every toll and fine from my record with a letter from the State of Texas that I was able to get certifying that I sold the vehicle. So far anyway.

@QueenB: I gave 3 cars to my adult children but I did the online transfer each time before I gave them the keys. That's just too much exposure especially since I knew some of their friends and in-laws had questionable judgement.

In Texas, the license plates remain with the vehicle not the owner unless the seller has disabled or personal license plates. While it would be a good idea to take the license plates off the vehicle,  that is not the correct way. 4951

@comedian: The state and the DMV said to remove the plates and the window sticker when selling the vehicle.

Even if you trade your vehicle in at a dealer, fill out the transfer form. The dealer doesn't always put a trade-in on the lot, it may go straight to auction and to who knows who. 4951

@OldGuy: Just traded my truck and didn't like the way it went down. We filled out the paper work but the dealer kept it. I didn't get a copy even though I asked. The dealer also kept my plates and wasn't too happy with me when I asked that they remove them from the truck before I left.
Went back the next day and the truck was not on the lot...obviously wholesaled out or auctioned.

TAKE OFF THE PLATES. Forget about feelings being hurt. If they want the car they will get the title change in a short time and the courthouse gives you new plates.  4951

@friday1: I agree,  first thing remove plates. First car I sold in Texas I removed the plates before they came to pick it up. Where I'm from you have to. That guy (in his 40's) and his Father was with him - boy were they ****. No way in hell were they driving off with plates in my name. They only lived a few blocks from me so off they went plateless.
