As the weather changes to beautiful spring more and more people are back to walking. I am begging you early morning walkers to PLEASE where bright colors or carry and small light. I leave for work at 6:00 am and twice already I have almost hit someone walking IN THE STREET with black workout clothing on. Make yourself visible please.

You would think it would be mandatory since it's a death risk. You wouldn't drive at night without turning on your lights, it would be against the law!

I almost slaughtered the older gentleman that picks up trash early in the mornings. I fell asleep at a friends and drove home around 5am the other Sunday and there he was casually walking across the road at the blind spot over a small hill going over the greenbelt. Luckily there was no other cars so I swerved into the next lane. 4951

Bought a safety vest last weekend for the morning dog walks.  Less than $10.00 at Lowe's and Home Depot but well worth it.  I see so many runners out when I walk the dog in the am in total black...  Just not smart. 4951

At least five or six times a week, I see people walking on the outer road crossing San Jacinto river (North or South) walking from Kingwood to Deerbrook Mall area.

Really don't know how they manage to keep from getting hit. I have come within inches of them before I see them in my headlights.

People are NOT the smartest beings on earth any longer. 4951

I would like to add that people walking and running in the streets need to do so against traffic, i.e. they need to be on the side where they will see the cars coming towards them.  Cyclists need to be on the same side as cars per the rules of the road, not riding against traffic.  Almost hit a couple walking their dog, on a retractable leash they did not have control of and walking with traffic.  4951

@Andreweggplant: I know different states vary on this rule. Is it "walk towards )facing) the traffic" in Texas?
I don't know.

@Safety44: yes, that is correct, when there are no sidewalks to be utilized.  And bicycles are to follow the "Rules of the Road" just like other wheeled vehicles.

@Safety44: I honestly wouldn't care what the law is in this regard.  Better to keep the danger in front of me than to have it approach from the rear, unless I'm coming up on a blind left hand curve, at which point I will move to the with-traffic side until I'm through the curve.  I've been running roads for 20+ years, so this seems to make the most sense.

Coming back from the park the other night I missed a hitch hiker. Never saw him at 55 mph. Dh saw him and wondered why he wasn't in the light by the gas station.
I love when they don't leash the dog too. Wth? 4951

@beadweaver: Not sure what is worse, no leash or those D#@n retractable leashes that people do not know how to control or use properly.  They should be banned.

@Andreweggplant:

I don't know why they won't even get some glow stix for around the neck, wrists and ankles. Reflective arm bands work as well as reflective tape.
I'd never walk these roads or side roads. Not the way I see people drive. I had to go over kingwood dr and all the way down west lake houston to the beltway and the things I saw made me think, are they completely unaware they are driving?

@beadweaver: I never paid attention until I got the dog. Never walked much but now I sometimes feel like I am taking my life in my hands just trying to walk the 3 to 4 blocks (depending on what way I go) to get to the Greenbelt.  People in Kingwood are awful when it comes to driving and courtesy...

@bubbleyes72:  We don't need another law to protect the stupid.  This thread as a warning is sufficient.  If they chose not to do so, let nature weed them out of the gene pool.... but then some poor innocent driver is going to get a major dent in their car!  Emoticon

What's the point of wearing clothing that makes you visible to drivers if the vast majority of drivers are more engrossed in their Smartphones than in the road in front of them???? (Not unlike all the mom's at Kingwood parks with their kids. Would it kill you to look at THEM instead of your texts, Pinterest of Facebook feed?)
I cycle in Kingwood daily and it's shocking to see how many of you people absolutely refuse to PUT YOUR PHONES DOWN while you are driving!!!!!!

I'll wear bright clothing...but I bet there's NO WAY you're gonna put down your phones while you're driving. 4951

@CycleGreen123:  True facts(s)...  I ride Metro to and from the office.  I am astounded at the number of people I see that are texting and driving, among other things.
