My DD wants to play the flute in 6th grade and my budget is extremely tight at the moment and I don't expect it to get better in the near future.  We went to test the instruments tonight and she definitely wants to play the flute.  The girl who was showing the instruments was surprised that she was able to step up and blow into the flute properly after only being told once how to do it.  She was very surprised at how well she did.   I am checking at my church also but wanted to see if anyone on here had one for cheap that they wanted to let go.  The band instructor said we can take them to him March 31st to check out to be sure it is up to standards for school. Thanks so much in advance. 4951

@dotti573, both of my boys are in orchestra so maybe things are different.  But I think you just rent the instrument.  You don't have to buy it.  I know for orchestra, there are 2 companies that come out and you chose which one you want to do business with.  Then you pay a rental fee monthly.  As an example a cello may be 40 a month, and a violin may be 25 a month.Call the middle school your dd will go to and ask to speak to someone in the band.  They teacher should be able to give you a solid amount that this will cost you.  If they don't do this, most likely they will even have a very affordable option for youEmoticon

@Fallon: Thank you.  The band director said there would be some companies there in March to figure it all out.  We have just been having so many medical bills and money is tight so I was hoping to figure out how to get her one and not have to worry about a rental fee every month.  I did find one company online that does her school and it was $39.00 a month.  I know that doesn't sound like a lot to most people but in my house in the last year that pays one specialist doctors appointment and we have been having a lot of them lately.  She loves to sing and does at church and at school and I wanted her to do Choir but she really wants to play the flute.

Have you checked the local pawn shops? You could likely get one fairly cheap, likely cheaper than renting. 4951

If you can't afford it, then maybe she can settle for choir.  I want a Mercedes, but I drive a Ford.Music is beautiful whether you play it on a flute or sing it with your voice. 4951

There are some really inexpensive ones on there. If you are comfortable with meeting someone in a public place or at a police station, it may be worth a shot to see if you can get the funds together for her. If not, as another poster suggested, you may have to wait until you can and enroll her in choir in the meantime. I played clarinet in middle school and rented. Hope you find something affordable. When all else fails, see if there is a bill you can eliminate, such as cable, internet, etc. That would free up some funds for the monthly rental fee. You may also want to check eBay. Hope it works out for you!

I'm sure you have. Just a suggestion. Wish I had one to give her. Maybe your church will have one to lend her. 4951

@dotti573:
Me too. I was in band in middle and high school and never heard those kinds of stories. I never went to camp though. There were a few relationships amongst us band geeks but that will happen in high school anyways.

@J2911: Thank you for that.  I'm hoping it works out but if it doesn't then it wasn't meant to be and she will have to deal with whatever happens.

Ask the Band teacher if they have any they can loan out or go to Porter Music and ask they have any used ones? 4951
