What do you all think, Is winter over?  It seems we have had such a mild winter.  January and February are normally colder than it's been this year.  I'm having the urge to go out and work in the yard.  I feel like putting in the veggie garden and all that.    4951

Yes. Mid Feb I start buying my veggies to get in the ground. Early crop of butter lettuce, spinach, romaine. I get my tomato plants but have the ability to keep them protected- still a bit early to set fruit- it's all about root growth right now. I haven't found the pepper plants I like to grow- but that's ok I have 5 pepper plants still producing. I just harvested some of my arugula- I forgot about it and it went wild over the winter. I still have quite a bit of it. Strawberries have already set fruit. Sooo - as far as my garden goes- it's been mild but I wouldn't say hugely atypical. My pepper plants usual produce and while the arugula is atypical - that's more to do with me forgetting about it than the weather. My elephant ear is frost burned. The bird migration is still about the same- Rufous Hummingbird is still here- ruby throated hummingbird may be starting back a bit early but can't confirm. Goldfinches are still here and haven't turned their summer yellow. Mockingbirds and cardinals are starting their territrial calls. Hawks are starting to migrate( haven't found feathers or a dead bird in the yard for a week). The Cedar Waxwings are starting to gather for their trip back North. All in all typical late Winter- early spring. Good for getting gardens ready- be prepared to cover tender plants but I thunk we're over the hard freezes 4951

Dpnt know what the man upstairs has planned but I went to Lowes yesterday looking for plants.
Changed out all the artificial Christmas plants in my window boxes and filled then with daffodils.
Blew all the leaves out of the floor beds and pruned the roses.
Fertizimg is scheduled for today!

Am I ready? YES!

It may take a little extra care but it will be worth it. 4951

Yes it is over, but we will get one more cold snap.  May not be a deep freeze, but it will be in the lower 30's.  We always do get a late one.  I have planted pretty much all the @Jpgurl has too.  I will cover the plants if we get a prolonged freeze.  I don't see that happening as we didn't even get one during the winter this year.  If you look up the weather, when it is suppose to get to freezing, and see the hourly forecast, you rarely need to cover your plants here.  Not once this year was it necessary.  We haven't hit 32 or below for over an hour, if even that, all winter.  The hourly forecast rocks.@Jpgurl, my pepper plant from last year has been going gangbusters!  Still producing nonstop.  I have never had one like this.  Once again, I was suckered into buying a tomato plant.  I will see what happens with it.  I can grow anything but those.  I feel like Charlie Brown, this will be the year I grow a freaking tomato!

@Fallon: Yea I haven't had much luck in the tomato dept. I Ohio I had beautiful tomatoes- I think it's too hot too long here. I will say I planted some in Oct and forgot about them. I got 3 beautiful tomatoes off of the plant. They were heirloom tomatoes and they were good. I got 2 green ones and pulled them off when they were green because of the one frost we had. Threw them in a paper bag for 3 weeks and they ripened quite nicely and were good.

I know it's crazy wearing shorts in February.  Going to plant some fruit trees I have been growing in pots.  And till my garden beds and I think I might try some cucumber seeds just to see if the soil is warm enough.   4951

@Fallon:
@Jpgurl:

we found that if we plant them near the patio where they only get sun half a day and give them plenty of water, they do great.

I picked up two plants at Lowes yesterday. 4951

Up until last year,  I have always had a bumper crop of tomatoes. So many I can't keep up with the production. The wonky warm/cold/heavy rain last spring and summer did a number on them....seems everyone had the same problem.I start them in old hanging basket pots until all danger of frost is gone then plant...but this year I'm just not feelin' it.I have always planted the same three or four varieties.  Anyone have any suggestions for favorite tomatoes? 4951

@Safety44:
That's what my vegetable garden gets sun in the afternoon and shaded in the morning. My tomatoes, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, green beans, etc. have all done well. It would be better if they got morning sun and afternoon shade but I use what I am dealt with.
