I need a new hot water heater.  Any suggestions where I can get one and who can install it?  Is Lowe's or Home Depot the best option, or can I get it done cheaper going with someone else.  Is installation  more expensive if it's in the attic? 4951

Yes, it is more expensive when in the attic. Go with Lowes or Home Depot. Rheem is a good brand. 4951

Rheem is a good brand but hard to say anymore since the controls are the same for several brands. Rheem has the same controller as the cheaper brands but I believe the tanks are better.  I went with Rheem and also ordered the replacement thermal couple at the same time to have on stand bye. I had a hard time getting the part last time even though it is very common which is disturbing. They should carry it at Lowes or HD but they don't or at least not the part I needed. Not going through that again.    4951

Not gonna be cheap - I replaced mine last year and it cost me $1200 - I'd like to meet the "engineer" who decided putting a water heater in the attic was a good idea!!@@@ 4951

I used LesCon last year, replaced two 50 gallon gas units in the attic.  Good, quick service, about $1800 for Rheems.  Got a quote from Alpha Omega for about $2800. 4951

Attic is not fun. Best to leave it in the box and push it up the ladder /stairs with a couple of guys. The attic install is very expensive. So much easier when on the ground. Did mine in less than an hour. 4951

Wjo you are in Tennessee right?  And, is yours in the attic there?  I'm sure it's a regional thing.....$1200 is kind of a middle range price too for our area here...... 4951

I can't remember what we paid but it was expensive and we had to bring things up to code too for City of Houston. 4951

@fudgiesmom2:

Code was supposed to be changing sometime soon. The guy said they were going require shorter but larger diameter tanks. Not sure why but going to play hell with those with smaller attic openings. 4951

One of the pros of living in a rancher. Also some cons though like a new roof will cost double. Still, does not make sense to put a it in the attic other than being more cost effective, not having to design a home with a HW closet or a spot in the garage is really the only advantage. 4951
