So we believe our double oven is the original (house built in 1979). Outside of minor quirks (like the top oven is slightly wider than the bottom one), the thing works like a horse! That said, I ran the cleaning setting for the top oven over the weekend. Man, the inside of the oven shines now. Since then, there is a humming/buzzing noise that is coming out of the top of the oven, by the knobs. It's not constant, but it varies in level of sound and it's making more noise than not. Any thoughts on how to get it to stop, or is it possibly telling us that it's on its way out.I've played with the timer and cleaning knobs to see if I could reset it, but nothing is making it stop. Thoughts? 4951

@ctl74: Try throwing the breaker for the oven.  Maybe a relay is stuck and this might free it up.

I'm going to scare you but here it goes. Our house in SC was built in '85- had a GE oven- like yours worked like a horse. One of the burners burned out- and sadly there are no replacements to be had- anywhere . Time for a new oven- so hubs goes to pull out the old one and install the new one- to find that the old oven had been improperly hard wired. He was horrified and shocked it had passed inspection. He said it was so close to starting a fire that he couldn't believe it didn't start a fire. He made the neccassary repairs. So my suggestion to you is to hire an electrician and get it checked. We've been here 13 years and every time we get into a project we always uncover the shoddiest. Of work!! I'm surprised our house hasn't crumble from it 4951

@Jpgurl: Ovens usually are hard wired if its electric 220v. Back in the 80's COH didn't pull inspections on these homes. If you update you have to use COH code now.

@ctl74:

Ours is the same thing. Has been making that noise for months. We turn off the breaker when its really annoying. Tonight though, one of the coils in the bottom failed and started sparking. I guess its time for a new oven unless we can get it fixed. 4951
