Over the past several days, Council Member Dave Martin and staff have been working proactively with Severn Trent Services and the City's Public Works and Engineering Department to address water quality and discolored water issues in Kingwood. According to both entities, the brown water is a result of construction occurring on private development near Northpark Drive and West Lake Houston Parkway. On Tuesday of this week, a private contractor was working to isolate fire hydrants, which led to the disruption of built up sediment in the water lines, and resulted in the discolored water experienced by some citizens. Unfortunately, media sources have compared the quality of Kingwood's water to that of Flint, Michigan, whose citizens most recently have seen high concentrations of lead. According to Jonathan Dawson, Severn Trent Project Manager - Kingwood, the local water is continually tested and found to be safe to consume based on the following facts:- Flint's water has high levels of lead in it (which can be fatal). The water in Kingwood does NOT.  The result of the lead test = 0.005 mg/l and the limit is 0.015 mg/l- The water in Kingwood comes from wells, which are naturally cleaner than lake water, however this means it is also rich in minerals such as iron and manganese, which if stirred up by main breaks or water hammer can cause the color issues.- The water from the wells is crystal clear and tested daily.  The water from the storage tanks is also crystal clear and tested daily in accordance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's (TCEQ) rules and regulations.- The water color has been only found in the transmission mains, and tests to be within the legal limits.  The results of the iron test =  0.040 mg/l and the limit is 0.30 mg/l  The results of the manganese =  0.013 mg/l and the limit is 0.05 mg/lSevern Trent flushes dead-end lines every month to prevent buildup of sediments in the pipes at 100 locations in Kingwood. As in the past week, Severn Trent also increases flushing on an as-needed basis to remove discolored water from the system.As of today, all of the distribution water mains are clear of all colored water. If customers continue to see issues, they are encouraged to first flush their lines for 5-10 minutes. If the problem persists, customers should contact the city's 3-1-1 Service Help Line or call Council Member Dave Martin's office at (832) 393-3008.

Again! !!! 😠😬😡
This is the latest on the Kingwood water issue. It’s an email Houston City Councilman David Martin shared with the Factor from the contractor hired to manage the water supply in Kingwood. In the letter the contractor says the water in the northeast Harris County Community has cleared up. They also say there are no health risks to residents and the water issue is in no way similar to that of Flint, Michigan as some have suggested.

Isiah:

The latest from our Contractor Severn Trent.

The water was clear as of 8:00am the morning.

However,.. we were just informed minutes ago that another contractor has broken a major water line on west lake Houston… We have our staff already in route to arrive within moments. We are attempting to get in front of this and isolate the area quickly so prevent the spread of discolored water. I will contact you with more information as we receive it. Graham is in route to the location now to get all the facts and coordinate the effort.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact my cell as I will be heading to the location as well.

Kindest regards,

Jonathan Dawson

"Customers are encouraged to first flush their lines for 5-10 minutes" That's a lot money for the city but wonder if the city will issue credit? 4951

@Sniper12: Running your tub for five minutes is about the same as partly filling up the tub for a bath.  I don't think that is going to cost too much.  Running the sprinkler system for a couple hours - different story!

@buffaloglenn: true... but many will flush each facet in the house, with all that extra water times that along with all the residence in kingwood is extra $$$,need to sue the contractors involved

Yep, no doubt about it. I'd be installing a water purification system. They're making it out to be acceptable & it's just plain not. #atascocitapointofview 4951

@Sniper12: If you realize the contractor authorized by the city set a fire plug and had to tap the main a 40 year old one at that. Cause and effect. The water is clear and this issue is put to bed. It smells like the same ole stinky COH water you find over the 100 square miles of Houston. Get a filter or get some bottles delivered. Life will go on..
Want to test bad water put it on your grass if it dies yes you have bad water. If  your freaked out about bacteria boil it and refrigerate it. I would like to see people leave though for sake of elbow room. 4951

They could flush the lines a little better around here. I rarely see hydrants tested. 4951

I think that if this brown water is so safe to drink the Councilman Martin should bring his family and staff, as well as the family & staff of Severn, and all should drink this wonderful brown water! Often I see floating particles in the water, is that safe also?

I get yellowish to brown water at least once a month, I'm on the phone with 311 each time. Severn tells me to flush toilets and run water for several minutes...that does run up the water bill. I've been here 15 years and never had water problems until about 4 years ago. I don't know what happened to change it but the water suddenly started being crappy.

Pretty sad to pay the city for water but have to buy bottled water to drink because our water is undrinkable. 4951

@TexasOma: Interesting.  I've lived in Kingwood now for 9 years in two different neighborhoods, and have yet to have undrinkable water.  Not one stomach bug or virus in that time, and no ill health effects.  Maybe I'm just lucky?  And my family too?  Is the brown water gone after the work Severn Trent did?  If so, feel free to keep kicking a dead horse but she ain't gonna get up and run.  If not, problem is not resolved and you should keep calling.

@buffaloglenn:

The brown water resolves after Severn does their job and I run the water as instructed, yes, indeed! But sometime within a month, the water will return yellowish to light brown to dark brown. In the toilet it looks like I didn't flush, but for sure I did!

Last time when they flushed the hydrants, the water was dark brown & I could see that from my end of the street, nearly a block away! NASTY!

Yes, I do call 311 again, Severn comes out again, and the water clears again! The dead horse is on the City of Houston's side! They are NOT providing our street with the clean drinking water we pay for! (We are in Forest Cove)

As I said, something happened to our water about 4 years ago! It was clear, clean and tasty when we first moved here, now is not!

@TexasOma: Here is a picture of the Kingwood water system, which does include Forest Cove.  I noticed a month or so ago that it looked like they were replacing one of the main feed lines into forest cove (saw them stringing it along Walnut and the bridge that goes into Trailwood.  Perhaps they knew there was an issue and were trying to address it?  Your water issue sounds like a different one than that which the Elm Grove and northern areas of Kingwood have experienced recently.

@TexasOma:
I also live in Forest Cove and luckily have not experienced the brown water. This makes me think the problem is local to a main line that Severn Trent has worked on.
I know there is a lot of work going on around Kingwood with all of the expansions, and this may add to the dirty water problem.
It just seems that no one pays attention to procedures or follow up to ensure the water is cleared up following work on a line.
If they haven't restored the system to the original state, Severn Trent and the COH haven't completed their job!
Procedures should include notification of people before work is done and verification that the water lines are flushed clear before the work is considered complete.
In my opinion, these are not accidents (broken water lines) we are talking about. They are incidents that can be prevented if the COH and Severn Trent do their job.
Plain and simple, it's somebody not following through and we pay way to much money to allow such.
