Humble ISD kindergarten classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. next year. This school year, kindergarten classes conclude at 1:50 p.m. The new kindergarten hours will take effect beginning in August with the start of the 2016-2017 school year.The longer school day is required by a change in state law.  House Bill 2610, passed by the Texas Legislature in 2015, specifies the minimum number of minutes in a school day and school year. These requirements will be enforced by the Texas Education Agency in 2016-2017.The change will benefit kindergarten students by providing them additional time for learning at school. For parents, the change brings convenience because they will be able to pick up all their elementary students at the same time. Currently, some parents pick up their kindergarten child at 1:50 p.m. and then return later to pick up older brothers and sisters when their grade levels are dismissed at 3:20 p.m. Next year, grades K-5 will be on the same schedule.Is this good/bad for your schedule? Do you think it'll be harder on the kindergartners?  4951

As a parent of a current Kinder kid who already goes to school from 8-3:15 (private school), I can say that I prefer it this way bc of my older kid. If I were to have to pick up the 5-yr old at an earlier time than my older kid, I would have to pay for after-school care. Right now I'm able to make it work with my job that I pick the two up when they get out, and then head home to log back into work while they do homework. Give the kids an extra recess time and DEAR (rest) time, throw in an art class... and there you make up the extra 90 minutes. 4951

I never understood why they got out earlier any ways. I agree with @ctl74 would a little art or music class kill them? I think not. Extra recess... definitely not.  4951

Although its hard on parents for the kids to get out earlier I think this is not a positive move in the childrens favor. Those kids need to be out playing and exercising their brains through movement. Not more closed off in a room time. I sure hope they get a long lunch and more recess and not more fill in the bubble sheets. They need to be blowing bubbles at 5 not filling them in.

Unless Texas laws have changed which according to the TEA website they have not. Kindergarten in Texas is not even mandatory. 4951

I think it depends on the individual kid. For the ones who attended preschool (which if they included extended day the hours are 9 to 2:30) it would be an easier adjustment.  The ones that never went to MDO or preschool are going to have a tough time adjusting to the long hours.  I agree, add a second recess or "play" time.  As a former preschool teacher the key is breaking the day up into many short sessions.  They don't have that long of an attention span.  4951

I agree with Weathergirl5.  Depends on the kid and what they are already use to.  My daughter does 1/2 day preschool from 8:30-12 MWF.  I signed her up for the same next year( just in case the Atlanta move falls through).   I would of loved for more "me" time and do full days but I just thought she will be in class all day soon enough.  She needs to  be a kid and play.  I think she can handle an all day by kindergarten but I agree for the kids that didn't qualify for free per-k and didn't go to preschool, It will be a tough adjustment.  I hope those parents know about the SpARK program at least.   4951

When my boys attended kindergarten here in KW (way back when) it was only half day sessions. I loved it, we still had plenty of time to spend together and it eased them into full day school. I think it will be hard on summer birthday children or any child that might be less mature. My boys had barely given up their afternoon naps by the time they were kindergarten age. 4951

@Burnsway:

What bubble sheets do you speak of? Genuinely curious. 4951

I also heard they will not take naps. I love the idea of adding the specials. Fine arts is important to their development at this age. 4951

@Burnsway: Kindergartners don't take the state tests.
My wife is a Kindergarten teacher and she's not happy about losing extra planning time, but other than that this really isn't that big of a deal. If a kid is already in school 6 hours a day, another hour and a half isn't going to make much of a difference. I can totally understand parents not wanting to have to deal with dismissal though. It was pretty nice having a separate dismissal for Kindergarten only. That car line.....ugh....no thanks.  4951
