I don't get why anyone would ever use debit to begin with.  Putting your pin # in, is usually when theft occurs.  Use your debit card as a cc.  Way safer for you too this way.

@Fallon: If your debit card has the chip, you cannot do that anymore.

@Fallon:

Fallon the new chip cards scramble before and after use. Thats why it takes a minute. You put it in the chip reader. It is only allowed one transaction as it approves your pin then it rescrambles all data so that if there is a skimmer in the machine the remake card the thieves make will not work because the data is not reusable.

It also forces all clerks to ask for a pin. Its not fail safe but it reduces theft dramatically.

Also banks are now with the chip card holding businesses responsible if they let you use it the old way. This is forcing businesses to take the theft seriously as before they didnt because they knew banks would cover it.

The bank will still cover your loss but now the stores have to pay the bank back if they did not follow chip procedure.

They can still get your cc info at gas pumps. Kroger hasn't done anything about that as far as I know

@mm4731:

Correct but if you use your card and its skimmed at the pump....the gas station will now have to pay the bank for covered loses and if you go and use your card say at kroger with chip machine it will scramble your data and the thieves will no longer be able to use the fake card they made. Most skimmers are left for days before they gather the info. By the time they make a card and use it, you probably will have it scrambled several times. If they are fast they may get one purchase in but it will way reduce multiple thefts. Plus as said the business that allowed the use without chip reading will now be held responsible for the loses. This will make businesses take more care with their customers cards and info.

I will never use my debit card in Kroger then.  I refuse to ever use it as a debit unless I am getting cash from the bank's ATM.  I can't even think of one time I have ever used it as a debit.So @burnsway are you saying you can no longer use your debit card as a credit as Kroger?

@Fallon:

Within the year you will have to give pin everywhere as they are going to hold all businesses accountable for loses for not using chip meathod .

We were told by both Capital One and Chase since both my DH and I had our cards compromised last year that you should always use your pin.  If you use it as a credit anyone can go to a self checkout and use your card as a credit.  If it required a pin they would have no way of knowing what it is unless they are sitting watching with binoculars getting your pin when you use it.All stores were supposed to have changed to the chip by October 2015 according to Chase and they would be starting to be fined for not using it.I went to HEB a few months ago and they are not using the chip.  They said that they were not switching to the chip method until the new store opens because they are not going to pay to switch it in one store then have to do it in the other. 4951

Dotti I had a banker tell me they dont get fined but if they choose not to use it they have to pay the bank what the bank paid the customer in loses.

Im sure we will hear different things because its new. They are probably given stores some time to change over to the new machines and programs.

They dont seem to be sending everyone new chip cards either. Just at replacement time. 2 of my credit cards do not have chips yet. My new bank card and one credit does.

It doesnt solve online issues either as they cant check chips that way but the skimmers never gave the thieves your 3 digit security code. This is why they always went shopping at places like kroger or best buy...etc with the fake cards they made. 4951
