Does anyone know if you have to give it back to your company when you leave or do you get to keep it? 4951

No. It is your personal ID. Has nothing to do with the company even though they may have funded it. 4951

@Odin:
You keep it and use it on your future jobs that require TWIC clearance.
They do have to be renewed every so often.

Thanks.  I might as well renew it then.  It's up very soon.Probably not a bad ID to keep active.  Not as good as the airline one I had.  That one was AWESOME!!!  Allowed me to cut through the security lines.  Big time/hassle saver. 4951

When I left my last job I was told I couldn't keep my notary stamp. I said - ok - then threw it in my purse and walked out. I've never used it since, but by golly it's mine now. 4951

BTW you can use it to get hotel discounts..just ask for government discount and I have been told, although I have not tired that it can be used as airport ID as I believe they are issued by the TSA. 4951

@hlh212: Thank you!!!!!  I will try it.  They are issued by the TSA.  I might get tackled and probed by a surly TSA worker with big hands, but if it works, it will be worth it.

@Odin: Hey, just let her grab and grope if she needs to. You will probably make her day, week, month or year. TSA girls need love too, you know. Emoticon

The one time I tried to use it at the airport there was a lot of confusion. Might be better now but I just use license or passport. 4951

@ET: My DW has used it a few times at airport security, it was accepted but begrudgingly. I use my Global Entry card which has a horrible picture. The TSA is better than it used to be. I recall reading about how a man with a Hawaiian driver's license was told that international licenses were not allowed.

Most airports use a nationally recognized security system dedicated to airport security to monitor people in controlled areas. In some ways it's more difficult and time consuming to get than a TWIC card.

The TWIC was started to control background checks on people having access to waterways that had access to open waters (Pacific and Atlantic oceans, Gulf of Mexico and Great Lakes. It was rapidly converted to use by our refinery system to monitor contractor access to work areas within the refinery. Never really caught on in the gas plant industry.

It is a good form of ID and accepted without question where it's recognized. Keep in mind that it's a government program so obtaining the card may take some effort and rework. The system does contain numerous glitches that may result in reapplication.

If you have one, renew it on time. Expiration lengthens to renewal process. 4951

Dopey program. The only places I find you need it are marine related facilities regulated by the USCG, no use for it elsewhere. Guess it will keep that terrorist with the explosive device out because he won't get a card and nobody can cut a chain link fence..... 4951

My wife laughs about it as an effective security card. She remembers the time she pulled up at the security gate at one of the refineries down on the ship channel. The guard checked her credentials and went to a computer.  The computer had one of those slow moving  banner messages that you used to see on computers as a screen saver. It said, "Move mouse to activate computer" .   The guy slowly moved the mouse to activate the screen as if he wasn't quite sure what he was doing. Scary. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood:

Since everybody wants to pay security guards as little as possible, you don't get the cream of the crop. Broke retirees and rehabs. We typically have more trouble with the guards than anything else. Airport security is a joke too, despite the spiffy blue shirts. 4951

@Safety44: Agree.  The TWIC card background check took MUCH less time than the airline background check.
Actually, the airline check took longer than the security clearance I needed for a defense/space job.  They went back to the beginning of time and kept calling and calling with questions.  It was ridiculous.   4951
