Darn. My assistant has worked for me for 2 years and I need to let her go. She has a lot of other projects on the side and she has become less and less focused and attentive to the work she does for me. Lately, she has started lecturing me about my shortcomings, as she perceives them, and this isn't going to work anymore. I turned over a major task to her back in November and she made enough newbie mistakes that reflected badly on me.

I've done a fair bit of firing in the past, and the first task is to change all passwords she has access to. That has taken some time, but I'm almost ready to break the news to her. I'm hoping it will come as a relief and give both of us a chance to take a deep breath and move forward.

Still, I'm not looking forward to it. She has a very strong personality and depending on her reaction, this could be unpleasant. Emoticon 4951

@Burnsway: I've been down this road before and have already lined up a couple of people and have given them small, very short-term tasks to see their quality of work, ability to meet deadlines, etc.

So sorry, @HollyHobby.  I know this won't be an easy day.  Can you possibly alert building security of the issue and have them nearby should she not take things well?  Or could you have someone else nearby to act as a buffer if necessary.  Hopefully neither will be necessary.  She has to know things are declining and couldn't possibly think it could continue.  4951

It may be helpful to have someone else in the room or nearby where they can hear what is said. I have seen some accused of things that were not said.

Sorry you have to do this. 4951

@donnatella: She lives out of state, so that won't be a problem! However, shutting down her access to all kinds of email accounts, social media accounts, etc. is basically the same thing.

I had to fire someone after they had gotten mad at me but then went and did what i had asked...when he came back he was making casual conversation to me about how i would want to be buried and have i ever thought about what would happen to my family if i was shot in the parking lot.
It went better than i expected but it helped that my 6'10" boss was near and stayed around for the next couple of weeks. Pretty sure that guy is in jail now. 4951

@HollyHobby: You homeschool your kids, right? Do you work from home as well? If so, I nominate you for the Wonder Woman award.

@HollyHobby

Best of luck to you. It's tough and not easy to do no matter how justified.

Been there, done that. Donatello has good points regarding taking
precautions. 4951

@hollyhobby It is a tough situation to be in. I hope it all goes as smoothly as possible. It's good that you have a few people lined up to step in and do some work. Hopefully one of them will work out and you will be able to replace her. 4951

It's also great that she lives out of state. Don't have to worry about anybody going postal. Hopefully like you said it will be a relief to both you and her. Emoticon 4951

So basically, it's a difficult phone call.  That's a ton better than having to do it in person, dealing with the tears or anger.  It still is no picnic. Best of luck with it and let us know how it goes. 4951

this could be unpleasant.

@HollyHobby: No matter how necessary, always keep in mind that no matter how unpleasant it will be for you... it will be much less pleasant for the employee.
And never say "It's not personal".  Because to the employee, it is VERY personal.  Sometimes that phrase triggers a negative response.  Best to just lay out the facts and wish them luck in their future endeavors.  If handled well, it can be spun into a positive for both.Of course, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know I'm sure... just rambling. 4951
