Okay DH and I have a cruise planned in March for our 10th wedding anniversary and now all this zika virus talk has us thinking of cancelling and taking a cruise at a later time.

If we choose to go they are saying to use DEET all the time and to be cautious at the ports, even suggesting staying in on the ship. I want to be able to go and enjoy our trip and not be "stuck" on the ship the whole time due to fear of getting off at the ports.

Would you go or would you cancel and use the credit for a trip later? 4951

It depends.  I think the biggest fear and threat is if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.  If you are not in that category I would not cancel. And even if you did stay on the ship there is no guarantee that a mosquito would not make it on the ship and into a cabin and you still might be bitten.  If you go you might as well go and have fun and do everything you want to do (which involves getting off the ship).  Otherwise, why go?  That said, I think this is going to be around for a while.  So if you cancel you might be waiting a very long time to re book.  Bottom line, it is a personal choice only you can make.  But those are my thoughts Emoticon   4951

So far, from I have read, a very high percentage of adults that get it, don't even know they got it.
So unless pregnancy is now or in the immediate future, I wouldn't worry about that.

@Weathergirl5:

Hi Weathergirl5, no plans on getting pregnant and for sure not pregnant. DH and I are seeing it the way you are with it being around for a while. I think if the CDC feels it is bad enough, they will do like they did with the Swine Flu and cancel all for travelers. We are going to give it a few more days to think it over and see what the "gut" says. 4951

I would probably go, bathe in mosquito repellent and pray without ceasing. Which port of calls will you be going to? 4951

@FoFa:

Correct and that's what we have been reading as well. I'm still unclear as to how we haven't heard anything about this virus before now but yet it's supposedly been around for years. 4951

Awww man. Those should be nice! I would definitely not want to stay on the ship!

ETA: Been to Cozumel a few times. You wouldn't necessarily miss a whole lot if you stayed on for that one. 4951

We have 3 cruises planned for this year starting in February. Unless you are trying to get pregnant or are it should not effect your plans. If you are going in the jungle I would use repellent and have a great time.  Just use common sense protect yourself if necessary and have a great cruise. We would definitely not change our plans. Have fun :-) 4951

@cowboysfan0314: We did that cruise last year and loved it. If you'll be on a beach, away from a lot of tropical undergrowth/forest, you might not see any/many mosquitoes at all. I would think that a lot would depend on the excursions you choose. If you're going to do ziplining or one of the rainforest activities on Belize, for example, then, yes, I'd worry a bit about mosquitoes.

@HollyHobby:

Thank you... We plan on doing the magic flying chairs and beach excursion in Isla Roatan, just chilling at the port in Belize and doing a Photo Safari thing in Cozumel, which I think we have decided to change due to it being at some ecological park and of course, you know some pesty little mosquito is going to want to join in on the fun! LOL

When you went, did you enjoy Belize? A lot of people says it's kind of like the Progresso port and not a lot to do. 4951
