Drove into Humble to one of the restaurants on the "1960 strip".....oh my my.......what a mistake.  What was once a nice little area looks and feels more like a Detroit drag......heavy traffic, lines to get in, hoodlum/thug looking folks, afraid to park in the parking lots for fear of car damage, afraid to even be standing in line waiting for a table......all in all, just a bad, ghetto/hood feeling......we left and went across the interstate to what was a little bit better and purposely picked out a place with no lines.....!   Never again - fact that it was a Saturday night probably made it worse.....I go over that way occasionally during the weekdays and it's not so bad, but man oh man at night it is horrible - the whole "Fearbrook", "Gunspoint" aura is all around........it's just sad to see what has happened to that once sweet, nice little town......never ever again......don't do it...... 4951

@ET: I'm talking about the section of 1960 in Humble near the intersection of 1960 and Highway 59, across from Deerbrook Mall, where there are many restaurants........

Where were you eating? Sounds like Italiano's near 59. Unless you mean on the other side of 59 past Deerbrook mall. That is a bit more rough of an area. We went to Cheddars one night and I got the same vibe. 4951

Where were you eating? Sounds like Italiano's near 59. I can't think of any other places along 59 that aren't the same old chain places. Unless you mean on the other side of 59 past Deerbrook mall. That is a bit more rough of an area. We went to Cheddars one night and I got the same vibe.

@donnatella: that's exactly where I was meeting family - at Cheddars........we left and went back over to the other side of the freeway.....I should have suggested Italianos cuz I go there often and even though it's kinda quirky to get over there, I at least feel safe in the parking lot there.......sheesh I was just dumbfounded......never again never ever

Longhorn Steakhouse is great !  We eat there at least once a month.  Never feel threatened.  I shopped at the mall today; no problem.  We also eat at Pappas and Saltgrass; no problems.  Where are you from ? 4951

Have any of you folks been down to the other end of 1960 on the West side of town after dark?

We eat at the Mexican resturaunt and Denny's a lot. These are both located on the South West corner of 1960 and 59. We also eat at a few on the West side of 59 across from Deerbrook Mall.

I agree, all neighborhoods are worse than they were years ago, but that's common to nearly all cities these days. You just have to practice awareness and use common sense.

Seriously, if Humble scares you, I suggest you stay on the far East side of I-45 and not go to downtown Houston either. Really, you should probably consider staying home. 4951

@magnoliamam: The clientele on the night we went was just unappealing. The food and service were good, but we were just surrounded by a whole mess of unpleasant. Seemed like many people there that night just don't get out much and have not mastered proper behavior in public. Kids old enough to know better acting like animals and the parents ignoring it or exhibiting similar behavior. Like the gates to the zoo were left open or something. That was our first and last visit to Cheddars.

We have been to Freebirds during the day, and also shopped at Academy, and did NOT get the same vibe. 4951

@doddlebug: where are YOU from?I also love Longhorn.....and Pappas and Saltgrass... wasn't speaking of that particular area.....but now, going to Deerbrook mall? - no, that ain't gonna happen......you take your life in your hands shopping in that place, and believe me, no pair of shoes or a handbag is worth it....and for your info, I'm a born and raised northside Houstonian and I'm older than dirt, so trust me here, I know of what I speak.....I figured saying something about what we saw and felt tonight was gonna upset someone's apple cart, but hey we all have a right to our opinion....you don't have to agree......in fact, I encourage you to head on over that way next Friday or Saturday night and enjoy the ambience......

@Safety44: I am a native northside Houstonian in my 60s, so really not necessary for you to tell me where to stay or not to go downtown.....I was just putting my observation and opinion out there to share - and your snarky comment about "staying home" was unecessary too......and yes, Humble's currrent condition SHOULD scare people.....
