When it was introduced it was meant to be a living wage. There were protsts from the business sector and the very rich. That has never changed. All changes to it have been resisted by the same people every time. It was never meant as something just for teens or part time workers. Too many loop holes have been created allowing corporations to get out of paying their fair share of what is owed to the communities they operate in, and they take resources out of, even though they will poormouth and scream that it isn't true, while they make record profits. It is time for the wage to raised & loopholes closed. There will still be profit to be made. Companies made money and the share holders made money, and wealthy were still wealthy when the taxes were higher. 4951

I believe businesses should get to pay whatever they want. They built it. If we allowed this the stingy creeps would go out of business because if business A pays good and Business B doesnt Then Business A will get good workers and customers and Business B will fail.

You force them to all pay the same there is no competion between businesses and no incentitive for workers to improve their skills.

If you want to succeed, get an education, work another job, start your own business, take a chance in life.  Do something other than flipping burgers, poking a cash register or stocking shelves.  Stop Emoticonissing money away on things you want rather than need.  When you artificially boost wages above the rate of inflation, the cost of goods go up, everything else follows and you're shortly right back where you were - staving on $15/hour, instead of $8. 4951

It also becomes a snowball hell. Burger cost 4.50...you force 15 buck minimum wage. Stingy creeps are not going to swallow that cost. They raise burger to 6.50. So this happens with all goods so now 15 an hour is no longer a livable wage so we force 25 an hour so they raise burgers to 10 bucks......and so fourth.

Eventually no one will make a livable wage. Also now all mom and pop shops are gone forever because they cant pay that.

Stop wanting something that doesnt belong to you. You didnt build it you dont get to tell it what to pay others. Dont like what one place pays....find another job or build your own business and pay your workers 25 bucks an hour out of your profits. 4951

That $15 an hour minimum wage crap has been debunked so many times. I can't believe people still fall for it. Some jobs simply are not worth $15 an hour. When someone has such a low level of skills that they can only find work as the French fry cook at McDonalds, I'm sorry, but that is not worthy of $15 an hour. Get over it. 4951

Bernie is just saying things the poor and/or uneducated want to hear, that's all. He wants their vote badly...and needs them.

Can't say I blame him. It's all a game of cat and mouse.

I had to leave home at 14 living at variouse pretty scary places including a car in 20 degree weather. My first job at a sonic paid me something like a buck something an hour plus tips which were about 9 to 12 bucks a night....lol. I eventually moved in with a friend paying her parents a few bucks for groceries and cleaning duties and few years later wanted to get an apartment so became a waitress at slick willies and was a damn good one and made an average of 40 a night with hourly wage being 2.01 This was 30 years ago.

I had no government help, no welfare, no stamps or low cost housing. This was also during a huge economocal crash. I did the inflation math one time and in the exact situtaion I was in with todays prices it would only take about 5.50 an hour to survive the same way but we have so many programs now very few 14 yr olds would find themselves in said situation.

If I can do it any smuck off the streets can. Only laws I agree with is child labor laws to an extent. I truly believe we should lift all wage laws. 4951

@deltadawn: Doesn't make sense to blame the companies for this, it is legal. I legally try to avoid taxes.  Bet you do, too.

Uggh I can't believe I am doing this because I avoid serious political, financial and religious conversations, but having said that, this topic sends me over the top. This sounds harsh, but  employees are assets to a company due to the fact they generate value and revenue. By the statement above everyone brings the same value and generates the same revenue. This is not true. An unskilled uneducated worker does not bring as much value or revenue. They perform a "task".  It is simple, if you can't live on minimum wage, improve your skills and education. If you truly believe that everyone brings the same value, and believe the government should regulate that maybe you should check out how well it works in Russia. It is basic business principles just as @hollyhobby & @burnsway stated above. I am exhausted by the thought of supporting and financing more people because they "should have" the same even if they do not do the same amount of work for it. If your goal is to only earn a "living wage" define what that is? Does that mean car, home ownership, cell phone? Every person defines living wage differently. Is cable,. internet and cell phone included in your living wage? To me living wage means bare minimum basics to survive. If you want more than that, you should improve your skills, education and get off your lazy a** because I work more than 40 hours a week, I paid for my education on my own, and I took risks and sacrificed to obtain my goals. 4951

Oh and BTW do you know what 85% of those rich corporate types were before they were rich? Poor. They struggled to get to the top without handouts. Want something? EARN IT!! 4951
