I want to start up my own business. Any advice on anything would be great. I have in mind what I want to do & would like some feedback. I really love to run errands & I would like to start up my concierge services. From going to grocery store , picking up dry cleaning, walking dog, going to buy items, to cleaning house. I already have 2 clients that will pay me monthly. Thanks 4951

I think it would be a gold mine if you could pick up kids at middle school for parents who are working. 4951

First, you need to write up a business plan. This is KEY!!

Then you need to set aside some money for marketing. Normally, I would suggest The local Chamber of Commerce, but I don't think it would be a good fit for your venture. KDC.com might be an idea, though.

I wish you lots of luck / I wish I had the chutzpah that you do! 4951

Make sure to go and file an assumed name with the county clerk and to keep a good tracking system for income/expenses. also remember to add up everything to deduct it off your taxes. As a sole proprietor you aren't going to have to worry about quarterly taxes so you'll have to keep track of everything for an entire year. I am actually starting my own business right now. Make sure there aren't any regulations or licenses involved in what you are doing, otherwise you will have to obtain those, and they may take some time to obtain, depending on how regulated your chosen field will be in. Do something that makes you feel like you make a difference. 4951

Even though you might not have to file quarterly taxes you might want to just so you don't get a surprise at tax time. You can get cheap business cards at Vista Print. Carry them on you at all times cause you never know when you might need one. As someone else mentioned bonding and insurance are a must. It protects you as well as gives your client's a piece of mind. Document everything and keep every receipt. You will need it when you file your Schedule C for taxes. Most important good luck and have fun. 4951

Make sure you are tracking your mileage, gas, time, etc.  What might seem on the surface an easy way to make money is often not.  Once you factor in your time along with all the "other" costs, it ends in the red real quick.  If you want to do it for fun or for something to do, that would be one thing, but to make a real business takes tons of paperwork and accounting.  Trust me, my husband and I have several businesses (with tax ID numbers, filing requirements, the whole 9 yards) and costs add up real quick. 4951

I know there are a couple of small business that have done this but running errands or picking up things for seniors is big business. Many live in the retirement communities around us and their only transportation is the van or minibus that the retirement center offers but they only go to certain places on certain days. 4951
