Hello everyone.   I have a 5th grader.   I live about 1.85 miles away from his middle school so too close for the bus.  I have to be at work by 7 at the latest.  I have used Kindercare all throughout elementary to drop him off and pick him up but that service stops after 5th grade.  I don't want him to walk or ride his bike in 6th grade.  I don't want to depend on car pooling because I don't want a parent to have to go out of their way to pick up my kid if theirs is sick one day.  Does anyone know of a responsible bus/van service?  I've been telling myself I have years to figure this out...well, those years are coming to end in August.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks! 4951

Gosh, we walked or rode our bike a mile to school everyday starting in Kindergarten.  Is there some neighbor kids he could always ride with and a car pool in case of inclement weather?

Can you back up .15 miles and jump on with somebody else outside the pick-up zone? Do they inventory the kids in the bus? 4951

Yeah, pretty much. Especially the first of the year. 4951

@N, your best bed will be to find out how some of his friends are getting to school that live close by.  Several kids in our area ride their bikes.  And on rainy days different moms take turns driving to school.Remember in middle Thursdays are late arrival days.  The kids have to be at 10:05 ish.  Setting up a car pool would be your best bet.

@Fallon: The bike thing with friends works sometimes.  Other times you will need to rely on a carpool for weather, but also for after school (or before) activities.  Things like football or volleyball won't affect sixth grade but may in seventh and eighth.  Also, if your child is in band, he will have to carry his instrument home every day, and depending on what that is, it could be easy or hard walking/biking to school.

Funny, I have just the last few days been thinking about this.  DD is in 5th grade, too, and I just recently found out that there's no bus.  I'm not sure why I assumed there would be a bus, but there's not. We're a little over a mile and a half away from the middle school.  I want her to ride her bike, I always rode my bike when I was a kid.  But she worries about riding with a heavy backpack because she's never been terribly confident on her bike, and the hill that goes under LHP is fun but scary, and she's all, "what will I do with my helmet" and it's a good point - will a helmet fit in a middle school locker?  My memory is fuzzy on this, but I seem to remember those lockers being pretty narrow, and a helmet might be a tight fit.  I'm still thinking she'll figure it out and ride her bike to school, and we'll have to come up with a backup plan with a neighbor or my mom for inclement weather days.  4951

Band.  Dangit.  I hadn't thought about an instrument.  She wants to do orchestra - so that'll be an extra problem on the bike.  I guess she's going to get her way and we'll have to come up with a carpool solution.  I hate asking our friends for help - I won't be able to contribute at ALL, really.  4951

When my girls were in elementary school I had to depend on a neighbor to get them to and from school, then when my oldest moved up to middle school I was able to repay the favor by taking the neighbors kid to school due to an earlier start time. Even if my daughter didn't go to school I still took the neighbor as that is what she for me. You would be surprised at how helpful neighbors can be when it comes to children! 4951

@JeepHair, it is hard for middle schoolers to rid a bike to school.  I hate to say that, because it makes the kids sound like prima donna's.  But both of my sons are in Orchestra, and there is no way they could have ridden with a stringed instrument.  The cold or heat, and damp, and bumping would have kept them out of tune permanently.  And I never see a middler schooler wearing a helmet.  I hate that, but I know it will not fit in their lockers.  No way.  And their backpacks are seriously way heavier than what I ever remember having to tote around.Car pools are just the safest and best ways.

@Fallon: Yep.  All of the things that have come up in our house during the last few days.   I was leaning toward the "suck it up, kid" position, and in the last ten minutes, I've leaned the opposite direction.  *sigh*  She has friends in our neighborhood - but I am fairly sure they're all in exactly the same boat - their parents work and won't have the flexibility to drive them to and from school every day.  We'll have to find someone with a full-sized van and some free time to tote them all back and forth.  LOL!There should be some sort of Kingwood Uber service.  I'm not even kidding, really.

My 6th grader rides her bike to school -  unless the weather is really nasty - i rode with her the first few days until we connected with a few kids that take the same route, and now they ride together. Just short of 2 miles each way on the greenbelt. She's in band and the flute is small enough to fit in her bookbag, I think one of the other kids has a big instrument in Orchestra that simply stays at school. My elementary school-er also rides his bike, short of 1 mile and I ride with him in the morning, but let him come home on his own, when he requests that. 4951

What about a basket for bikes. I played violin and used a bungee cord to strap my instrument on the back. Along with a basket for my books. I walked or rode to school in 3rd grade till Jr. High. Easily a mile and a half. Each way. We always had several kids that walked together that lived on the same street. no doubt you will find a good solution! 4951
