My bedroom windows and curtains have been neglected for some time now.  Today i tackled the dirty dusty job.  There are a lot of corners and crevices in double hung vinyl windows.  A toothbrush isn't get it all; what tools do you use to get the corners?And how often do you clean your window curtains? I think its been years for me and it showed!  So much caked on dust its gross, they are in the wash now.   4951

I never had curtain until we moved in this house. They were here and I've not taken them down. But for me, all they do is collect dust.  4951

@cgm10sne1: I only have them in the bedrooms to keep light out.  4951

Usually take them down once a year for Spring cleaning. If notice any build up in between, take the vacuum to them. 4951

I take mine down every 4 months. Wash the windows down inside, wash the shears and then use dryell for the heavy dry clean drapes. I have 11 heavy panels and they cost almost as much to dry clean as I paid.
I have had them 11 years, used them in 5 homes. They still look new.
I do run the vacuum cleaner hose over them weekly as I heavy clean. We are all highly allergic to dust and can't do anything about all the material, carpeting etc. 4951

@foxymama:  Stirring up all that dust and crud today can't have helped your respiratory issues.  Since we have the thick wooden blinds on all of the windows, I only have valances.  I like the open feel that gives the house.  Those come down regularly for washing, but they get dusted weekly.

@tatertot58:

I am considering doing plantation shutters. Do you like them? Do they collect a lot of dust? 4951

I like the look of shutters but there are more areas to collect dust.  Are they easy to take off and clean? 4951

Love them!  They are the wider wooden ones and permanently attached so they are easily dusted along with everything in the house.  A couple of times a year I wipe them all down.  After dusting you can wipe them with a fabric softener sheet and the dust does not stick to them as much.
