I am thinking of getting my daughter a "real" necklace for her upcoming birthday. I like James Avery and perused the options, but I wonder if a 16" (shortest they sell) chain will hang to low (she is a thin, petite almost 11 year old). Google just pulls up an endless mess of options from stores I have never heard of, mixed in with Claires and similar. I'm wondering if anyone local has any ideas I could look into. Looks like a small birthstone pendant and 16" chain from James Avery will run me about $110. I'd say that is my max to spend on this item. She is very responsible with her things but she is still pretty young. Any ideas are appreciated! 4951

If you find a pendent you like you can take it to any jeweler and get a custom length chain. 4951

Another thought is earings. I think at 13 my sister and I got our ears pierced, at 16 we got pearl earrings, at 18 diamond studs, and 21 a diamond necklace to match the earings. Just another option. 4951

My DD is going to be 11 and I would NEVER spend that much money on jewelry for her right now.  She is like me.  She starts the day with something on then takes it off and it's in her back pack by the end of the day.  Years ago she had diamond earrings - 2 different sets and lost them both at daycare within 2 weeks. I did spend about 40 on a ring and she still has it but barely wears it.  She had to have a 4 dollar necklace at Christmas.  I think she wore it once.  She is extremely trustworthy just doesn't like the confinement feeling of the jewelry. 4951

Sorry my last post appears twice, not sure how that happened.

Staylifted, it is good to hear your daughters still wear the necklaces - that is the type of gift I am hoping to find for her. A little bit grown up and a nice quality that can last a long time. Ally, I like your idea about the earrings. She got her ears pierced a couple years ago and I really don't think she has ever lost an earring. She is shockingly responsible for her age, or maybe I'm just still disorganized Emoticon 4951

My daughter received a really nice cross necklace when she was 12 that was bought at the jewlers bench. I don't think it was terribly expensive and the chain is a perfect length for her 4951

We bought our daughter a black onyx/ gold band ring when she graduated 8th grade, it wasn't super expensive. She still wears it to this day. Most of her other jewelry is silver. Gold was in back then... 4951

I think a piece of jewelry is a nice gift. I think the 16 inch chain would be fine. 4951

I personally would make it into an amazing token of the age she is.  Get back to nature on the trails, near the water, go to the beach.. have her collect stones, rocks, sticks, greenry ( read up on poison plants... morning glories will poison you if you try to pull them and get their stem oil on you )) and shells ect and have her make that into her piece of jewelry.. Take your shoes off, squish your toes in the mud... When she gathers all her loot, find someone creative to walk through Hobby Lobby with 4951
