I received a welcome back to school email from HISD today. This was at the bottom of it:"While this may seem silly, due to various safety concerns including injuries from falling and fires, any students who received a “hoverboard” for the holidays will be asked to leave those at home.  We cannot risk having them on campus." 4951

What parent would send their kid to school with one in the first place? Totally inappropriate place for it. 4951

@allymansfield: same parents that send their kid to school with a bike, skateboard, or scooter?

@mm4731:

I disagree. A bike or scooter are both locked up outside and therefore not a distraction in school. Not sure school policy on skateboards. 4951

any students who received a hoverboard for the holidays

@BBQguy:

So any students who received one for their birthday in November or January are exempt from the rule, right? 4951

Why are they called hover boards?  When I first heard the term, I expected something much cooler. 4951

I prefer yo send my kid to school with a 2 ton motorized weapon on wheels. Much safer than a hoverboard. 4951

Those doohickies are not hoverboards....  They're poser / wannabe hoverboards...  When I think of hoverboards, I think of Back To The Future....  "McFly" style!

Well why don't you enlighten me on what parents would.

And my kids told me lots of kids ride their skateboards to school. Some of the teachers even let them keep the skateboard in their classrooms

@mm4731:

Not sure why you are so defensive? I see them as a toy and toys don't belong in school. That have also been shown to be unsafe. And lastly, they are expensive and a "hot" item. Why send your kid to school with something that is likely to be targeted for theft? Does not seem wise in my opinion. But feel free to send one with your kids if you would like. I just don't see it as appropriate.

@allymansfield: Totally inappropriate to bring knives and guns to school but it gets done quite frequently.

It is also why we have "Caution: Hot" on a coffee cup.  People are idiots.
