I am a big fan of letting them all settle their own messes. We just muck things up.
I would reluctantly agree to lob a few missiles in from time to time - just to keep them on their toes. Helps keep the stockpile fresh, too. 4951

With Saudi Arabia executing some 46 Muslim terrorists (4 Shiites and the rest Sunnis) and a Shiite Cleric, Iran (mostly Shiites) has set the Saudi embassy in Iran on fire.  Saudi Arabia has broken off diplomatic relations with Iran.  Approximately, 85-90% of Muslims across the world are Sunni, and 10-15% are Shia.  Let them focus on killing each other while we sit back and watch.  There is an Arabic proverb that goes something like this:  I, against my brothers. I and my brothers against my cousins. I and my brothers and my cousins against the world.Right now, the Muslims are fighting among themselves.  If the USA or any other country gets involved, the Shiites and Sunnis will band together to fight the outsider(s). 4951

Hillary is a War Hawk.  She cares nothing about our troops and does not respect them.  She will throw them into other countries without proper support and sacrifice them without hesitation. The problem is that Trump and Cruz would likely do the same thing. 4951

the conclusions of the cato institute are very suspect. how does cruz fall so far down the list when his advice is to carpetbomb syria which would enflame even further the fires of the middle east? The Cato Institute is an American libertarian think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C. It was founded as the Charles Koch Foundation in 1974 by Ed Crane, Murray Rothbard, and Charles Koch,[6] chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the conglomerate Koch Industries.[nb 1] In July 1976, the name was changed to the Cato Institute.[6][7] Cato was established to have a focus on public advocacy, media exposure and societal influence.[8] According to the 2014 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report (Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, University of Pennsylvania), Cato is number 16 in the "Top Think Tanks Worldwide" and number 8 in the "Top Think Tanks in the United States".[9] Cato also topped the 2014 list of the budget-adjusted ranking of international development think tanks.[10]
Cato Institute

The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank that often works
in coalitions with right-wing groups. Cato's extensive publications
program deals with a host of policy issues including budget issues,
Social Security, monetary policy, natural resource policy, military
spending, government regulation, international trade, and myriad other
issues. While the Cato Institute has increased its ties to right-wing
policymakers over the years, it often reveals it's libertarian
philosophy in addressing government intrusion into privacy issues,
recently calling the proposed federal marriage amendment "unnecessary, anti-Federalist, and anti-democratic."

Principal Issues
A libertarian public policy organization that aspires to work
outside the traditional conservative v. liberal political framework.Labels itself a "market-liberal" organization with the caveat
that liberal "has clearly been corrupted by contemporary American
liberals."Cato was named for "Cato's Letters" - a series of libertarian tracts that the organization credits as a catalyst for the American Revolution.Cato leads the push for privatization of government services; as
early as 1983, Cato initiated the first push for the privatization of
Social Security, and has heavily backed it ever since.Cato supports the wholesale elimination of eight cabinet
agencies— Commerce, Education, Energy, Labor, Agriculture, Interior,
Transportation and Veterans Affairs— and the privatization of many
government services.
Activities
In 2001, the Washington Post, noting Cato's influence,
said it "has spent about $3 million in the past six years to run a
virtual war room to promote Social Security privatization."Cato sponsors periodic policy forums and book forums, major
policy conferences, Cato has held major conferences in London, Moscow,
Shanghai, and Mexico City.

Main reason I retired from the military. I'm done with these BS conflicts. We get nothing out of it.We don't need anything they have and they will never have anything of value if they choose to have a theocracy or dictatorship. In the event we do need something just take it. They are not worthy of it. Making deals with countries that still stone people to death for adultery and being gay like Iran....beyond effin insane.     4951

geez what a bogus piece of
work THAT is. they managed to put carson up at the top and he doesn't
even understand foreign affairs at ALL. and trump and cruz way down the
list when they both are swordrattlers and sheildthumpers. but it does
tell you who the cato institute favors. the fact is that neither
political party is going to particularly give a **** about the troops
unless we have a draft which would put the children and
grandchildren of the powerplayers and big donors at risk. otherwise it
only sends people they don't give a **** about to die in military
interventions.  the proof is that with all the flying ********** about
taking care of our vets, very little is actually done. this is why you
have private and public attempts to address the needs of our veterans.
14 or 15 years of war will pile up a massive number of vets with
physical and/or mental issues which need ongoing treatment while those
******s running for your vote wave a little plastic flag of patriotism
and the talk about cutting budgets and downsizing without mentioning our
responsibilities to those they sent to do the national bidding.

Never going to be another draft. That is what the National Guard is used for today. Over 50% of the combat power in Iraq and Afghanistan was supplied by guess who...The National Guard. Only issue with that, if your state suffers a tragedy like a hurricane or flood you are SOL during a major conflict. Gotta love the Federal Government. 4951

@beastmode: we had the national guard AND a draft during the viet nam war.  many people joined the national guard in the mistaken belief they would thus avoid active service in that conflict. in actuality, the national guard is considered the reserve force. those units can be called up at any time for service whether it is dealing with floods or foreign conflicts. if these units fall short as in vietnam, then they vote in a draft. in short, if there is a need, there not only can be a draft, but there will be a draftWhat are the Reserves and National Guard?
The Reserve Components of the Armed Forces are: The Army National
Guard of the United States, The Army Reserve, The Navy Reserve, The
Marine Corps Reserve, The Air National Guard of the United States, The
Air Force Reserve, and The Coast Guard Reserve.
All Reserve and Guard service members are assigned to one of three
Reserve Component categories--the Ready Reserve, the Retired Reserve,
and the Selected Reserve.http://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/guard-and-reserve-faqs.htmlActive Duty vs. Reserve or National Guard

What is the difference between someone who is active duty military and someone who is in the Reserve or National Guard?

A person who is active duty is in the military full time. They work
for the military full time, may live on a military base, and can be
deployed at any time. Persons in the Reserve or National Guard are not
full-time active duty military personnel, although they can be deployed
at any time should the need arise.

The Reserve
Each branch of the military has a Reserve component and the
Reserve are under the command of their respective military branch (e.g.,
Army Reserve are under the command of the Army). The purpose of the
Reserve is to provide and maintain trained units and qualified persons
to be available for active duty in the armed forces when needed. This
may be in times of war, in a national emergency, or as the need occurs
based on threats to national security. Their presence can be called upon
to serve either stateside or overseas. The primary job of the Reserve
is to fill the gaps in stateside service positions when the active duty
forces ship overseas. Members of the Reserve are required to participate
in training drills one weekend a month and two weeks per year.

National Guard
The National Guard consists of the Army National Guard and the
Air Force's Air National Guard. While federally funded, the National
Guard is organized and controlled by state. However, in times of war,
the National Guard can become federalized and deployed. The National
Guard engages in a number of activities. During local emergencies,
National Guard units assist communities endangered by storms, floods,
fires, and other disasters. National Guard companies deployed overseas
may see combat, but are more often building schools and hospitals,
training local peacekeepers, or teaching local farmers more efficient
farming techniques and better ways to use of their land. As with the
Reserve, the National Guard requires training drills one weekend a month
and two weeks per year. National Guard members are given Veteran status
if they have served for 30 consecutive days in a war zone.

Deployment
Members of the Reserve and National Guard may be deployed. When
scheduled to deploy, they may have extended drill in preparation,
resulting in a greater time commitment on behalf of the Service Member.
The current conflicts (Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi
Freedom/Operation New Dawn; OEF/OIF/OND) have an all volunteer force,
which could result in multiple deployments (as opposed to previous
conflicts like Vietnam when a draft was instituted to create additional
military personnel). OIF/OEF/OND have been the largest and longest
lasting mobilization of the Reserve and National Guard since the Korean
War.http://www.va.gov/vetsinworkplace/docs/em_activeReserve.html

With the presidential campaign now nearly a full year in, there are some definite trends emerging as to the stances of the candidates on key issues. One of those issues is how to handle the emergence of Daesh (aka ISIS) and other terrorist organizations and whether or not direct intervention would be a possibility under certain presidents. While some candidates have been clearly beating the war drums, despite the fact that it would almost certainly be counterproductive, others have taken a more moderate approach, with a few even going so far in the other direction as to be considered almost isolationist. One of the key ways to measure how much of a hawk each candidate would be is to measure the number of times they have called for ground forces, air strikes, safe zones, or international action against terrorists. That’s what the 2016 Presidential Candidate Intervention Meter hopes to measure.A point value is assigned to each call for action against extremists groups and organizations, ranging from 10 for drone strikes to 100 for ground troops. Embedding with Iraqi troops, carpet bombing, and the use of special forces also receive point values based on their relative level of intervention. Whenever any of the candidates calls for any of the items on the list they receive a score, with a higher tally meaning they are extremely hawkish and a low score meaning they tend toward a lighter presence. They are then ranked against one another to see where they stand relative to one another.Senator Lindsey Graham was the most likely to engage in a major war effort, which surprises no one, given his rhetoric that could almost be called bloodthirsty. With his exit from the race, Hillary Clinton moves up from her previous close second, again, not too shocking as she has actually been the architect of several violent actions in the region. Senator Marco Rubio and Dr. Ben Carson also score fairly high when it comes to calling for more bloodshed. At the other end of the spectrum we have the dovish (and increasingly politically irrelevant) Rand Paul and Martin O’Malley, who would prefer to handle things with a much lighter touch. The surprises come in the middle of the pack, with Donald Trump who, despite his alpha male swagger and tough talk, is only slightly more interventionist than Senators Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders. The ranking tool was partially created by Micah Zenko of the Council on Foreign Relations by tracking the calls for force, though the actual scoring system was developed by Trevor Thrall of the Libertarian CATO Institute. The idea is to keep an eye on how much blood, money, and time we will spend fighting extremist groups, or whether we will allow nations where they operate to handle the situation themselves, with a potential victory for such groups seemingly more likely. In other words, it’s not exactly an easy choice.Thrall admits that it’s hardly a scientific tool, merely one more way to see what the candidates are planning if and when they get into the Oval Office. Either way, it’s a handy snapshot to give voters an idea of where a candidate stands on one of the more important issues of our time.LINK 4951

Unless WWIII breaks out never going to be another draft. It is political suicide. If the numbers get low they start offering large bonuses for enlisted which works. Flash 25-35K or more in tax free money along with a promotion in front of someone with no degree under the age of 25. I have seen so many people re-enlist just to get the coin even though they wanted out. Promoting people to E-5 or E-6 without going to the schools which use to be unheard of.       4951
