My cousin just posted on Facebook.  He started a gofundme to raise money for an Alaskan Cruise for his 40th anniversary.  Wants to surprise his wife.  Oh my goodness.  Really? 4951

Like so many things, I think they originally started with good intentions. Helping a kid with cancer or someone facing a real life emergency or tragic event. Then people just started jumping on board with every damn request they could think of.  Sadly, there are still some very worthy causes that many would help if there wasn't such a proliferation of these funds every where you turn. If you want something, just save for it like everyone else does. 4951

You are not alone. People set them up for every thing.

The fees taken from the donations are quite high and I am pretty sure the people that are receiving the funds do not realize that they will most likely receive a 1099 at tax time.

I was surprised when reading something the other day the some donators did not realize the donations were not tax deductible. 4951

You should also be aware of legitimate charities that use professional telephone solicitors to call for donations.  It depends on the arrangement, but the charity actually gets only a fraction of your contribution.  Those annoying telephone solicitors keep the rest.  4951

Today's plea to fund some sort of garden planter so local firemen can eat healthy - from the guy selling the garden apparatus - topped the list. Soon got deleted. I figured firemen can buy healthy vegetables when they block the entrance to HEB on their shopping trips. 4951

It seems that one has been going around. I got one asking for donations to build a tower garden for station 101. Cannot remember who posted it but it was either her or on the other site a week or two ago. 4951

It was on here today. I looked at the site and he had raised $70 in 26 days - way more than I would have thought - but a long way from the $1200 he wanted. Just amazing. 4951

I think there is more than one for this. The other one was posted by a female. Maybe I should start one. I would like to retire and build a log cabin in the mountains... 4951

As with anything, I think there are some legit and worthy causes out there. I do tend to give a side eye to the ones requesting assistance for personal desires that people should take personal responsibility for. 4951
