Just went through it.  One thing I learned, the new one said to drain a couple of gallons a month. I always thought it was once a year. I also bought the replacement parts for the burner when I bought the new one. Not going through that again trying to find the right parts and waiting for it arrive. Sucks. I got a Rheem. Seems better than the Whirpool I had but most of the parts look identical....probably exactly the same.  4951

Mine went out a day before I was leaving for Las Vegas. I called my cousin (master plumber) he said you can buy it and I'll pick it up or I can buy it and install it today. I purchased one from Lowes online, he picked up same day and installed it all within an hour, in about thirty minutes I had hot water! Emoticon Next day I flew out for my trip!

Rheem manual suggest to drain a few quarts every month to flush out mineral deposits. I'm going to start doing it, we have fairly hard water and likely why my last one died at a young age. I also installed a new water main so that should help  The old line, full of rust, very thick.   Another good thing to do is put Vaseline around the water pipe connections on top. It will prevent scale and rust from forming.   4951

A water heater is not that heard to replace. But if it's in an attic it might be worth the money to have someone do it. They aren't light in weight. 4951

I've got a gas Kenmore with Roto Swirl that has been going strong since Feb 2001. Have never run any out the drain. Hope it goes a few more years...knock on wood! 4951
