Is it my detergent or washer that is failing me?

I rinse but don't scrub my dishes when they go in the dishwasher. Lately, some things (not all) have been coming out looking less than clean. I use the Finish powerball detergent.

I am tired of washing things twice.

Dishwasher is about 12 years old. 4951

Maybe try to turn your hot water heater up some if you have on a more economical setting. 4951

I have a new dishwasher and can't use anything but the liquid stuff.  The little capsules never dissolve in mine.  Not sure why, the manual recommmends them.   4951

You could try running it empty with a cup of vinegar poured in the bottom - that should help clean it. Many of the older ones have a mesh strainer cup in the bottom, make sure there is nothing caught in there, if it has one. 4951

@beastmode:

I just raised the temp two notches. Immediately after that, i warned my husband that i changed the temp. We are such creatures of habit of how much we turn the water. 4951

Thanks for the idea. Last time I ran it with a dishwasher cleaner, it triggered an asthma attack and i had to leave home till the air cleared.

I don't know if that will work but in theory it should. At 125 degrees uncomfortable in a few seconds. At 150 degrees hot water burn baby instantly and anything on those dishes.     4951

Pull the spray bar out and clean the screen underneath it, might be surprised at what all it catches. Think ,your stomach does not break a lot of that down too. 4951

Dishwashers are the second most inefficient 'convenience' machine in your house. Clothes dryer is #1. The most usual caue of a dishwasher not cleaning is a clogged waste line. (The hose that goes from the dishwasher to garbage disposal.) Also check to make sure the spigot, if you have one, from the intake line is fully open. A dishwasher is to be cleaned once every 6 months as per the manufaturers' instructions.Dan the Handyman. 4951

One to two notches on temp should improve some but too hot, it will dry fast and likely leave a bunch of spots. May have test it on a couple of settings. They say it will also clean better if you get the sink tap hot first then fire it up instead of the cold, lukewarm water going in there. I'm going to try this which makes sense.  I have only had issues now and then, usually when the soap packet gets stuck and the lift fails to open.  4951

I read this a few years back, a lady who considers herself to be a cleaning expert said to run the kitchen faucet till it's hot then turn on the dishwasher, then turn faucet off. Just like your tap the water starts out cold, so you are mixing hot and cold water so it's not as hot as it should be. Dishwashers usually start with a hot water rinse to get off the hard to remove stuff. Not saying I ever did this and I don't know how well it works, but just another option. 4951

Since i am usually rinsing just before starting the washer , it should be starting off with hot water and not having the cold water to start. I heard that somewhere in the past too. 4951

I didn't think the water temp coming into the washer mattered. I assumed the heating element at the bottom was what got the water hot. Maybe using hot water to fill the washer decreases the amount of time it would take to heat the water up, but the washer still doesn't start washing until the water reaches a certain temperature. 4951
