Peep this:  You're walking thru the woods with only a water bottle and you come upon either a Bobcat, a Cougar or a Mountain Lion....  It's sizing you up - What do you do?  Turn and run?  .....What is your best means of defense?  ....We're currently looking for some land, so I just proposed this question to my beautiful hubbs, to which he replied, "Hiss like a cat at it"....  (And yes, he proceeded to hiss, just like a cat)....                                        And so I questioned his response, "Really, Bub ".... "Hiss at it?"....                                                                   Hence, I came on here....  So, what say you dudes

Dude don't run. Cats like to chase prey. Fight to the death. Make yourself appear bigger... Or carry a gun Emoticon 4951

Back away from the bobcat slowly and deliberatelyAvoid running away because that could trigger a pursuit responseIf possible, spray the animal with water - and what landlady said! 4951

@herron1345:
Why you walking in woods without protection? Even a big stick can work. Oh, and no running, see how house kitties love the chase? Big ones do also... 4951

My body wasn't built for running...... So I would: A) say a little prayer, B) probably pee my pants just a bit, and C) make a loud noises, such as a fake gun shotgun, then probably pray a bit more. 4951

i think the greater threat is to pets not humans. When we hiked in the wild in Canada we were told that if a wild animal approached us that we should maintain eye contact, make loud noises and walk slowly backward while facing it. The guide said turning and running was the worst thing to do.Fortunately we did not need to use this advice so I can't confirm how reliable it is.  But I do know that most of the time these wild creatures are pretty stealth and do not seek out humans so the chances of coming across one on your own I think would be fairly remote. 4951

Lol while in Tijuana we accidentally walked into a bar that cater more to the sailors coming in to port. Lol
We sat in a booth to enjoy some cold beer and rest from shopping. All of a sudden I hear a cat growl. I turned a this prostitute was staring at me. Lol I hiss and growled and she moved away . We finished our beers and left.
Hissing at mean cats sometimes works.
Now in the wilderness and this is after sleeping 20 feet away and under their loft, I think I fist would pee a bit. Maybe even poop a little. Then I'd start to cry. Lol
I would definitely not run from any animal. Make myself as large and loud as I could. Then again my wailing and sobbing along with the smell of poop might make them move on.
Never walk in the wilderness unprotected. Remember when you use a spray do not let it blow back in your face or you will be it's next meal. 4951

Don't walk alone in areas where there might be mountain lions.Give the lion a way to escape.  The lion doesn't want a confrontation.Stare the lion in the eyes.  If the lion attacks, fight.  You should have a gun or at least something else to use as a weapon.  Even a water bottle can be a weapon.  Lions go for the throat. 4951

Deltadawn makes a good point about spraying it with a after bottle. It's what we do when we're riding and dogs chase us. It deters almost any dog- animals aren't expecting to get wet!  Lol it does take some talent- you have to start sprinting- watch for traffic- watch the dog and keep doing those things while reaching down grabbing the bottle and squirting the dog(s). 4951
