I say good for the homeowner. This is how responsible gun ownership should be. He had his firearm ready to protect his family if he had to but was able to see no immediate threat and exercise restraint. Good man.I do feel he would have been well within his rights to shoot, and I would not have faulted him in the least for doing so, but I think he made a good choice. The kid will certainly be charged.

When using deadly force, although sometimes it is a split second decision, one has to consider " can I prove myself innocent in front of the grand jury" our instructor drilled that into us. This homeowner had time and made a wise decision. Now them not charging him, that makes no sense, especially if he was tearing things up. You cant handcuff or bind him, not really a whole lot you could do without taking a ride downtown with him, maybe hold him at gunpoint while on the phone with 911, telling them you think he is about to hurt himself or someone there, should get a unit over there in a hurry.
