I've taken it upon myself to try to do a pre-Christmas house cleaning. Seems like things got away from us when my DW had her stroke back in the summer. Then there was some travel and getting several of my kitchen cabinets and crown molding done. We have both perfected the decorating style of stacking things up everywhere, no horizontal spaces left. When there is utter chaos in just about every room  I have a harder time focusing on one room or area. So I decided to start on the 2 guest rooms upstairs, the one my son was living in for 2 years until he got out on his own and the one that our Gkids typically stay in for sleepovers, those rooms need the least amount of attention.  My office is the 3rd room upstairs but it's a project that is onto itself and will come later. With my wife gone for the week I will probably hit our bedroom tomorrow. Then the family room so I  can put up the tree. Crazy week ahead it's yuck outside so better to work indoors today! 4951

Treat both of you to a professional cleaning. There are several listed around here, and at least one that is a KDC sponsor with a banner at the top. 4951

Deal with anything as you come upon it..if it belongs in a different room, take it and put it away in that room. If you don't need it, throw it away. If you think you "might" need it, throw it away. 4951

@donnatella: This is great once you've gotten a handle on it, but cleaning services don't help with "clutter" and that seems to be the issue.I do the opposite of you, @chrisinkingwood.  Attack the most-used room first.  For me, that's usually the kitchen - everyone in my house thinks that my kitchen counter is the best place to store all of their crap.  Emoticon  Attack one surface at a time - get everything in its rightful place (and keep a trash can with you, as that's the rightful place of most of my crap).  Once you can get THAT space done, the rest of the house will not be as daunting.

I always start in the one room that will give me the quickest gratification..kitchen or bathroom. Since you are remodeling...I would probably start in the living or common areas because most things you find in other rooms probably belong in those areas, that way you can put stuff away correctly as you go. 4951

It takes sooo much less time to keep a house clean as it does to clean one. I hate to clean so I just do a little every morning and pick up some at night. I am free to nap all day because it's done. 4951

@BooBear: I think we would.  I'm all about staying on top of the cleaning/clutter as I go - it's so much easier to just not let it get that bad.  Because I'm the kind of person that is either a neat freak or a complete slob - but there's nothing in between.  As long as it's manageable, I'm  a neat freak.  If it crosses the line into "messy," I'll get overwhelmed and give up and it'll very quickly become a serious hazard and they'll have to feature me on "hoarders."

I like to keep the cleaning wipes everywhere..when I brush my teeth, I'm wiping down the counters, making coffee, unloading dishwasher and scrubbing sink. I have a scrub brush in my shower that I'll quickly wipe down the door with before I get out. I never notice that I'm doing those things because I'm doing something else at the same time. 4951

@BooBear: Seriously.  We're the same person.  I keep a tub of those Clorox wipes in every bathroom and in the kitchen, and I just wipe down counters and whatnot whenever the mood strikes me.  I've got a dish-scrubber thingie in the shower with the handle full of dawn/vinegar, so I can scrub the shower while I'm in there, whenever I have a spare minute or two.

@Ray:  That is the mentality that people have when the hoarding starts.  If you haven't needed it in the last few months (except for obvious holiday items), then toss it, give it away, or sell it.
