@HollyHobby:

Considering my kids DO go to parochial school and I get hit up for MORE $ throughout the year...and it's not selling stuff to friends, either.... I think I'll have to pass on this one! 4951

We homeschool, so 100% of our educational expenses come out of our own pockets. I'm not interested in subsidizing the expenses of other people's kids more than I already do via taxes. 4951

Really you guys, as much as I hate or public school system it's really not their fault or our districts. We throw way more money at them than is needed but it never reaches them so they still have to raise funds.....(deep pockets elsewhere)

But I dont do fund raisers I have to work at to raise money....too lazy, send me cookie doh or come pick up my extra box tops but no way I'm running or jump roping....lol 4951

This was not meant to start a tirade on how much we pay in taxes. I being one who is completely disgusted by how much I pay in taxes here in Kingwood as well, so much that I pay more in taxes than my house payment! I'm also in a new neighborhood, which means I can look forward to my taxes increasing at least for the next 5 years. One thing I have learned is where that money goes. This area is growing. Extremely fast. The majority of our tax dollars go to maintain and keep up schools and public facilities.  Think about it, Humble has one of the largest school populations in Houston. Now factor all the up keep that comes in the form of maintenance; plumbing, electricity, painting, grounds, building, buses ect. Have a quote on home repairs lately? Its not cheap. I left a title one district to teach in my own community. The funds there are not as well spent. There is no hot water, the schools are dilapidated, the electricity goes out when the wind blows, the plumbing is awful, and God forbid you ride a bus without a back up bus and parent list. Parents want there kids to play sports, be in band, have new experiences, so money there goes for things like that. Perfect example the school where  I worked was an over crowded middle school in the condition stated above. Title one schools who take federal money means they have to spend that money on what the government dictates, so instead of repairing the school back up to standard, they opted to build on a state of the art band and theater hall with the 4 million. (ridiculous) Humble, has very few  title one schools, even some that qualify do not accept the title or the funds because they understand that every dollar counts. So everything else is extra, which means funds have to be raised. We as educators are stuck in the middle of this. Parents want their kids to have opportunities, but think  tax dollars should cover it all. After overhead, and your child's textbooks and other materials have been paid their is nothing left for extra. The average textbook costs over 100.00 dollars. the list can go on.  So teachers, (who pay taxes and have kids too) donate their time, money, and belongings, and try to come up with ways to raise money so these kids can have these opportunities. Our biggest contributors are parents and local businesses. Everything that is done here in Humble stays here in Humble.  In return for your taxes, the schools also offer up their facilities to host peewee games and community events of other organizations because YOU do pay taxes. The kids volunteer in various businesses to learn skills that are useful, instead of playing video games, and watching TV. They earn community service hours. Which in life nothing is free and it does cost money to transport them and so on. You have access to the library and other classes which also feeds into public education.The idea behind this was not to send home a candy fundraiser with kids going door to door, or Yankee candles that are over priced, or pizza and cookie dough. The idea was to offer something that is beneficial to everyone (which exercise is) in hope that these kids  receive   a better example of community and activity instead of letting society and todays culture direct them down a path of sedentary and disease prone futures.  The idea was to offer something that a whole freaking lot of people here in Humble do on a regular basis at a cheaper cost and it actually go to use instead of a corporations pocket. The idea was to offer an event that anyone could participate in regardless of fitness level, age, location, time, and comfort zones that could be done as a family, a group of friends, an organization, or an individual.  Its an offer to those who are interested that will benefit a lot of kids in the community. As with any offer its optional, which means you do not have to agree or participate but, please do not use this post for negative discussion as it attaches a stigma that is irrelevant of its true intentions.Thank you. 4951
