Hey everyone,
My name is Ashley and I'm looking for a female chocolate lab puppy (hopefully free to my good home)
I had a stroke and spinal cord injury almost six years ago and I have a friend who trains them as service dogs. If anyone knows of anyone, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!
I need a companion who can be trained to assist me. I have PTSD from the traumatic events of the stroke and do not believe in pharmaceuticals...Works for some, but not for me. That's why I want a service dog.
Would like to have her as a,puppy and am partial to chocolate labs. Just let me know!!! 4951

Some on here work with rescues and might be able to help you. I think there was a thread about almost getting one. Let me see if I can find it and bump it up for you. 4951

We JUST pulled a chocolate lab puppy- However it is not free. You can contact the rescue here. www.lsawl.org.  There is an application on the web page. We require home checks and vet references from all of our applicants. Please understand that we are a nonprofit organization ( as are many rescues) and the adoption fee covers vetting and care for the dogs we bring into our program. Some of the dogs in our program have come from horrendous circumstances and need a lot of care before being adopted.   4951

If you are wanting a service animal, I don't think you are looking in the puppy age group. You probably want to aim older with some basic obedience already taught.

Good luck to you. 4951

Best to have your friend who trains service dogs, assist you with the search. Appropriate temperament testing would be essential. Not all puppies are cut out to be service dogs. Even some of those accepted into the biggest, most well-funded programs don't make the cut.  You might also consider contacting groups such as PossibilityDogs.org, which pulls dogs with the right temperaments from shelters, then puts them through professional assistance dog training. When you find "free to a good home", be sure to see proof of puppy vaccinations (there are three rounds total by the time a dog is 16 weeks) from a licensed vet. It's buyer beware otherwise. Puppies not properly vaccinated may come down with Parvo or Distemper, which are expensive to treat and can be fatal. 4951

Thanks everyone. I grew up with a chocolate lab and she was the best dog I've ever had. The reason I want a puppy is the fact that I've had several labs that I've fostered and know how to train them, thanks to my father!! However, I don't know how to train service dogs so my friend suggested that she could teach me on that as well!! Can't wait. Dogs are a girl's best friend!!! Will check out those shelters though. @gingerlicious: Would you be open to a black lab?  I posted one on another thread who is 25.00(she is at a rescue group) and has her first round of shots

Have your friend who trains service dogs assist you in acquiring a service potential puppy.  Good luck in your search.  Better to get a chocolate lab with some black or yellow dogs in pedigree as one that has been strictly color bred for generations gas just been bred for color.  Sometimes these can be hyper as they have been bred strictly for color and not temperament with high trainability. 4951
