The Avalon has a gas smell again. Not sure why. We make sure we don't over fill it but I think the charcoal canister is worn out. Guess I shouldn't complain... an18 year old car with 340,000 miles on it.  Trying to figure out what is causing it, no gas leaks. I think it is just some blow off from the canister. I drove it today and while it smelt of gasoline it didn't burst into flames.I have the front end of my Land Rover engine torn apart. Needed to rebuild the steering pump and after the gas smelled bad in the Toyota today I went back to working on the LR. The valve cover gaskets are leaking so I had ordered a new set. Only thing holding me back is they are a ***** to change out. Have to remove the intake plenum and that means breaking into the cooling system. Lots of wiring harnesses to move, the secondary air system (think emissions) and a ton of other things. Finally got them replaced but also found that 2 of my spark plug wires are shot so have to replace the set. Have to order those. Meanwhile the mosquitoes came back full force biting. Then I checked inside the vehicle and found that after the last really heavy rains 2 weeks ago I now have more mold inside the car on the upholstery. This happened with the heavy rains last spring and it took a week of cleaning and airing out the car to get rid of the mold. Guess I didn't get it all what with the humidity. Trying not to beat myself up over it. None of this is anything I could have prevented or solved. The older I get the harder it is to do car repairs. Hands just don't work so well with trigger fingers and cramps. Sometimes I feel like I am a failure in life. But nothing I did caused my problems. They just happened. I get depressed but the sound of a grandchild or my wife saying, "I love you" brings me back.   Tomorrow will be a better day. You'll see! Ordered the new spark plug wires. $70 and should be here Monday. Oh well, I waited this long so it won't hurt to wait another week. And on the upside my wife did get the new company car so we have one GOOD car. Hope everyone has a nice tomorrow.  4951

Here is what my spark plug boots looked like as they crumbled in my hands. Only 2 and these were pretty high end wires. 4951

Just think - at least you know how to do all the repairs yourself so you are saving money there.  I hope today is going better for you than yesterday!!! 4951

Hang in there.  Sometimes I feel the same way when things break down and I'm either really busy on other projects or don't work on things often enough to really stay in shape.  I have a BIL who is a mechanic, and a top-notch one at that.  He is better and faster than anyone I have ever seen, from an old 30's car to today's fully computerized electronic machines.  I have to remember that it's more of a hobby for me, and not my area of expertise.  So, perspective is the key.Is there any way to get your Land Rover inside, at least until you can get all the work done on it you want?  My dad had to do that with his jeep as it kept developing leaks and was problematic inside as you described.  4951

plugs are the wrong heat rrange. It sometimes is better to buy OEM. AutoZone and all the big box have generic parts. 4951

No, the plugs are actually the ones recommended. The wires are Magnecore which is a high end brand but more affordable than the ones from the dealership which are about $30 per wire. I called Magnecore and the tech told me it sounded like heat from the manifold or the secondary air system which is part of the EGR assembly. None of my other wires had any problems. Land Rovers just have weird engines. 4951

@buffaloglenn: Thanks! Doing better today when I put it all into perspective. Unfortunately my LR is lifted and also has a roof rack so it won't fit into the garage. I may set up my pop up canopy to work on it and try to demold the interior. I leaks when we get really heavy rain like a few weeks ago. Should have checked it out the day after it rained but I forgot!
