@topcat: Warm atmosphere is just as good as the warm that comes from a fireplace fire.
I would do that if I didn't have gas logs. I think it's beautiful.

I used to love a fire in the fireplace.  We have the gas logs, but every time we've used the fireplace in the past, we (mostly I) come down with sinus problems.  We now have our flat screen TV in front of the fireplace.  We may end up removing the fireplace and putting some shelves/cabinets so the TV will sit back in that area.We can no longer have a real Christmas tree because of my sinuses/allergies.  Of course, we haven't put up a tree for several years.  The kids are too old and no grandchildren, so it's not worth the effort. 4951

I put candles in mine when not using it for a fire. At some point, hope to get an energy efficient insert. 4951

@RogueHippEE:

I've only used mine once since buying here, that was fifteen years ago. It's time for me to have it cleaned before I think about using it. 4951

We love having a fireplace and use it every chance we get. It is configured for both gas and wood, but so far, we only burn wood. 4951

My wife and her late husband installed gas logs but after she and I married I took them out. Call me old fashioned but I like hearing and watching the crackling and sparks from logs on the fire and somehow the gas jets just didn't do anything for me.  I also don't mind trecking out behind our garage where I erected a covered area for the firewood to keep it dry. We keep a small rack to hold extra wood at our back door in a covered area for most of the winter so I only have to fill it from the main pile every few days or so. Usually I have enough wood from pruning or removing trees on my property and have had pretty good luck finding wood that neighbors put out for the trash or after a big storm. This year, not so much luck so I may buy a 1/4 cord if it looks like I'm running out. 4951

The last house I lived in didn't have gas logs so I tried burning wood, but every time I did the house would get real smokey. The flue was stuck open so when I didn't have a fire going cold air would rush in. I ended up covering it with cardboard to keep the cold out. My house now has an enclosed gas fireplace that I can turn on and off with a remote. I love it and turn it on any chance I get. 4951

We sat around the outdoor firepit lastnight and burned every limb that had fallen with all the wind we just had. Looks like I need more wood with the cold front on the move . 4951

Do like my grandma. Get a fake one, decorate it it once. At the end of the season move it to the garage and put a sheet over it. Next year it's ready to go, just move and plug in! 4951

@allymansfield:  That's a great idea, but my garage is full of tools, saws, and other equipment.  We can only park one car in it.  Your Grandma sounds like a clever woman!

Please remember to hire a chimney sweep to make sure it's clean.
Tis the season to be safe.

My dh thought me nuts when we bought our first home and I insisted on it. It had been a lease for 5 yrs and I did not know if it had ever been cleaned.
Chimney cricket it top coat and tails came. Not one speck of soot had entered my home but a lot left.
The $75 investment was worth my peace of mind.
Please have a warm safe holiday season. 4951
